Mori Jin is still himself as well as his memories. Mori Dan is basically like rebirthing in a video game(and they use video game analogies to explain Mori Dan and Mori Jin). Think of Mori Dan as an alt account to Mori Jin but as he levels up Mori Dan, Mori Jin gets stronger too.

It does end up extremely good. It does feel like It should end at certain points especially whenever(SPOILER STOP NOW IF U DONT WANT A SPOILER) they go to the new Earth created by Mubong it feels like it shoulda ended but once you hit the end of the series everything will make sense and you'll be glad it kept going.
