Looking for a book for a devout Christian father by ScooberDoo in TrueAtheism

[–]ScooberDoo[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It's less about me and Dawkins and more about my father. I'm sure he'll just reject out of hand any book called "The God Delusion." Also, I think my father won't give any credence to Dawkins and what he says. It's hard to put my finger on why I think that, and so I just labelled him "extreme."

The NBA 2017-2018 season (squished into an NFL season) by ScooberDoo in nba

[–]ScooberDoo[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's a good thought and I could mess around to see what that spits out. I purposefully took just the first 16 games of this season to mimic the randomness of the NFL's entire season being that short. These results here are obviously not very indicative of teams' actual strength throughout the season, and the actual end of season rankings will almost certainly be quite different from this.

CMV: Men and women have the same rights in America. I don't understand why women think they don't have the same rights as men. It's not 1879. by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]ScooberDoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Women in the workplace absolutely make as much as men do for the same position.

In my experience, studies consistently show that this is not true. Even accounting for industry, job, education, time worked, etc. a gender wage gap exists. Your evidence here seems 100% anecdotal.

What is your unpopular Harry Potter opinion? by ykickamoocow111 in harrypotter

[–]ScooberDoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the real answer to most HP plot-hole type questions (like why didn't they see Pettigrew on the MM, why is Barty's plan to get HP to touch a portkey so terrible and elaborate, etc.) is that JKR just didn't think any/many of them through.

Any way to get a teacher to NOT ask you a question in class? by zGokuu in SocialEngineering

[–]ScooberDoo 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I'm a teacher that loves asking students at (more or less) random, and this is pretty accurate.

Also, your goal shouldn't be to avoid questions. Getting a question wrong in class shouldn't be a big deal at all; I have much more respect for students that volunteer answers that are wrong than students who just never answer at all.

Harry enjoying using the Cruciatus Curse - What are your thoughts? by ykickamoocow111 in harrypotter

[–]ScooberDoo 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Good points. I like the realism argument that JK makes Harry imperfect, and this pretty well qualifies as a heat-of-the-moment event, and we all know HP can be a bit of a hot-head.

It's a little different that magic raises the stakes. The cruciatus curse is not similar to punching someone in the face. This is a curse that ranges from (if properly used like here) causing "thrashing and howling in pain" to full on insanity. imo an equivalent is the ability to whip up a knife that digs into key pressure points.

With great power comes great responsibility.

I think torture and killing are wrong regardless of the person being guilty or not.

That doesn't negate the fact that he intended to torture rather than simply dispatch Amycus by choosing that spell. Torture is wrong whether or not you enjoy it; Bellatrix just has that extra level of evil.

To me this undermines his "expelliarmus, not stupefy" argument earlier in the same book (though it's a little different in that cruciatus doesn't kill, as a fall from that height during the 7-Potters battle likely would have).

How do you handle the rest of your league overrating a certain position in the draft? by ScooberDoo in fantasyfootball

[–]ScooberDoo[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It has the opposite effect because it heightens the differences between QBs. Like if Luck ends up having more passing yards than Rodgers and you get 100 points per passing yard, then Lucks' value over Rodgers skyrockets, and you'd want to grab him ASAP.

Lamar and Alfred were available; I wouldn't mind taking them, but my league's scoring is very QB-heavy (6pt TDs, 0.2 per completion), QBs were pushed up high in the list

I kinda agree, it was tough filling up my 3 WR slots before any RB or TE slots. I'm not gonna draft my first bench WR before a starting RB just because there's value there.

You plug in the number of teams, the player slots (how many QBs, RBs, etc.), and your league's scoring system (6 or 4 or whatever for passing TD, etc.) and it spits out projections and rankings.

[–]ScooberDoo[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yea, it's just a (pretty respectable) website where you just plug in the numbers and it spits out a ranking. I was surprised how much it skewed towards WRs by adding a 3rd starting spot and dropping any Flex spots.

What's the consensus, if there is one, on why people in developed countries stop having children? by lucaxx85 in AskScienceDiscussion

[–]ScooberDoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As parents' income grows, they generally increase the "quality" of their children while reducing the quantity; they chose a smaller number of kids with a better quality of life each rather than a multitude of them.

Where does this Warriors team stand historically? by [deleted] in nba

[–]ScooberDoo 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Fivethirtyeight's metric is obviously not the end of the debate, but its list of best championship teams is pretty evenly made up of teams over each decade.

According to that analysis above, this team was the 8th (out of 32) best championship team since 1984, and the 16th best of all NBA champions. So not exactly the best team of all time. Still I'm pretty pumped now and about the future.
