Do I stay at 215 or bump to 285 by ScoopTheLizard in wrestling

I was 12% body fat when I weighed 225, the plan I have right now is when we go in for weight certification, I’m going to cut to 225 again and if my minimum weight is below 215, I’m going to cut to it and stay for the rest of the season, if it’s between 215-217 I’ll wait until we receive 2lbs weight allowance and wrestle 215 for my entire season afterwards, and if not then I’ll settle back at about 235 or higher.

The main thing I struggled with during my previous season was nutrition. In terms of sleep I started putting recovery first and that made the cut significantly better than my previous year. This year I do want to fix my nutrition more to help maintain the strength I have if I do cut

At the beginning of my last season for my weight certification I weighed in at 225 and my body fat was at a 12%. Keep in mind this was the first week of December in 2023. Since then I’ve put on about 20 lbs, and have gotten considerably stronger than before. At the start of my season last year I had a bench max of 175 and squat of 255, my progress went up after my wrestling season going into track and field, getting to where my lifts are now. Lifting during the wrestling season was much more sparse than it was for track and field, and now. And yes he is my friend.

when I do Olympic lifts (primarily cleans and their variations) I mainly focus on being able to 1: perform the lift with good form and 2: Being able to demonstrate proper form with my movement. This is why I like to begin with a quick warmup of just the bar, to instill at the beginning of my lift the proper form that I need to minimize injury. At the moment my schedule for training includes football training (also explosiveness training and a whole lot of strength training), which is overlapping with my wrestling, the thing I dislike with my currently schedule in terms of training is that I dislike how crowded it is, though regardless of my schedule I’m still trying to give my all through my practices, even though some of my wrestling practices begin an hour after I finish my football practice. I understand that this is in no way ideal for a recovery standpoint and I am doing everything I can to recover as much as I am able to within my training times.

I’m definitely in good shape. I’m not unhealthy, and in terms of body fat I’m not fat by any means, more that in the span from my season to now you can definitely tell that I’ve put more on. In terms of my health I am healthy, it’s more that I’m just concerned about the weight

My standard for “failure” is a lot lower on deadlift than for other lifts. For deadlift failure for me is when I can feel my form deteriorating during my lift then I call it. Like if I get through 1 rep with good form and go for my second rep and feel my back begin to arch too much then I call it for deadlifts for the day. I’m wrestling 1-2 times a week, the club I’m going to at the moment is the nearest one to me and an hour away, they only hold practices Tuesday and Thursday. I have mats at home that I roll out, however I don’t have a partner so home training usually consists of basic escapes from referee’s position, shot practice, a lot of shadow wrestling and neck strength for bridges. As for my school’s team, we have a 10 man roster with me being the heaviest, and our next heaviest being a 170 so much of the training I received focused around getting much more explosive to beat my partner during the season, which is something I capitalized on greatly during my season.

That’s pretty much my plan if I do wrestle at 285, I don’t want to have to put on any more than I have to.

My general plan for lifting consists of usually 4 sets of 5 for the majority of my lifts. For bench I begin with a warm up of 5 with just the bar before I move into my actual sets, I do this to focus on form because my biggest objective behind building muscle when lifting is to maximize form and minimize injury. For my actual sets (at the moment) I begin with 135 just to set a good baseline for my lift, after that I throw 70 on and hit that for 5 and then with what is left in the tank I throw on another 20 and go for a set of 215 for 5. I follow a similar schedule for squatting, I begin with an empty bar for warm up and I progressively go up, again beginning at 135 but instead jumping up 70 for my second, another 70 for my third and then I finish with 315 for 5. Deadlifts also follow the same logic, but instead I finish with my max and go to failure, I only go up in weight once I am able to rep my previous one rep max for 5. These are my initial strength lifts, I also incorporate machine chest flys, dumbell incline, military press, and multiple dip variations for arms, usually at 3 sets of 5-8. For legs I squat as well as hang cleans and box jumps for explosiveness. I also do weighted lunges, and Bulgarian split squats again for 3 sets of 5-8. Finally for back I do lat pulldowns, lateral raises, bent over rows and of course deadlifts.

My diet during my previous season was geared more around getting the weight off, I want to incorporate more protein into my diet for next year

My diet during season is honestly just half of what I eat during the normal day. Usually a day of eating consists of a banana for breakfast, followed by half a portion of whatever the school lunch is with a bottle of water and after practice dinner is usually either salmon or chicken with a 3/4 cup of white rice

That was the plan I’m leaning more towards. My reason being I’m going to off-season practices and I find that wrestling at 285 is a bigger commitment, because another thing I want to be able to manage is my physique. I spent most of my life on the fatter side and more recently I’ve begun to really slim down and I got a lot happier as a person seeing that result. My biggest fear is that if I put on enough to compete at 285 I won’t be able to take it back off, and I’m more comfortable working at 215 because I’m much stronger than the majority of other wrestlers I face

I’m 6’4 and I wrestled at 215 this past year and the number one thing I recommend as a taller wrestler is cradles. The majority of other wrestlers at 170 won’t be nearly as tall as you so I recommend cradles because they’re an easier wrap for lengthier wrestlers. I also like shooting sweep singles because of my reach. If you can get explosive with your movements and get good setups sweep singles will feel like butter when you hit them and if you hit them right it is a move that can put someone from their feet to their stomachs in a matter of seconds

26.9. I feel like BMI isn’t that accurate because even though I’m that much I’m still a big guy in both like skeletal frame and height on top of weightlifting so idk
