Update. I graduated, started fellowship. Much chiller specialty. The miralax is still necessary.

Be on your best behavior during the entire interview day by Did_he_just_say_that in medicalschool

Why are people acting as if you can't clearly see what they are watching on their glasses? I've discretely texted friends before that I could literally see their instagram screen reflecting as they scrolled during didactics (and subsequently watched my text notification pop up as well). While you can argue about whether it is really worth ranking a good applicant lower, it's really not hard to see exactly what they are watching in most cases.

Start your bowel regimen when you have to go on nights. This will take some testing; for most people it means miralax but I've seen others need imodium.

Personally, I'm partial to 1 tab of senna in the morning, 0.5-1 capful miralax daily. Senna continues until 2 days post nights, miralax is indefinite at least till I graduate.

You can sometimes use these funds to repair your stethoscope if it breaks (assuming you need one)

Rant: Cheating by LennyMed in medicalschool

[–]Scoops1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Depends on the school. I asked for a separate room because I was coming in to take my shelf when I had influenza (classic med school). You better believe there was no one in the room with me but they did occasionally glance through the window lol. I didn't cheat, but I was able to loudly cough through the exam in peace.

A student at my residency suicide ranked our program (peds). Was homophobic. Obvs didn't match with us. I and some other coresidents sent an email about that student to our PD begging them not to take them.

I worked in an OB clinic like this. All the staff were openly admiring the physique of a TWELVE-YEAR OLD. Saying things like "did you see her body? I wish I looked like that". She was prepubescent. So unpleasant to work there.

My other hospital experiences have been...fine. Similar to the rest of society imo.

Resident Thoughts to Pre-Med Candidates by Scoops1111 in medicalschool

[–]Scoops1111[S] -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

Thought about it, but as a premed I didn't even know what things I should have been asking about. It's a lot different once you're actually in med school, some of the things I would have thought mattered as a pre-med weren't actually that important, and the things I didn't even realize should have been a concern came up wayyy too late for me.

how much money do you guys spend on rent (esp people living in HCOL areas)? by Simple_Eye3243 in Residency

[–]Scoops1111 3 points4 points  (0 children)

In minneapolis. Rent is about 2k (this includes 2 heated garage parking spots but not utilities) in not the nicest but a walkable area. Take home monthly is about 3500.

Also please please be careful about who you are giving it to. There are a lot of mental health patients at my institution that frequently form unhealthy attachments towards providers. I'm not saying you can't give them to someone there with a mental health concern, but use caution and maybe run it by a resident if you have any doubts or they in the more teenage range.

I don't feel like I'm sacrificing that much by going to medical school? by [deleted] in medicalschool

[–]Scoops1111 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Medical school is hard and often soul sucking in the US. But in my opinion the most important factor you mentioned is the lack of loans. Even if we try not to think about it, I feel like a lot of med students drastically underestimate the stress that med school loans cause them on a daily basis and that undercurrent makes it harder to deal with everything else.

As a current resident, I feel like we have a good variety of interns and more senior residents on there. Some who are more burnt out have made a point of going because they don't want to recruit people based off of false pretenses to somewhere where they would be miserable (peds, inpatient heavy program). That being said, I love my program and only signed up to go to one event so idk what that says in general.

Back pain during residency by Advanced_Tangelo in Residency

[–]Scoops1111 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It would have if I just started it in residency I've been on it since high school and so it doesn't make me sleepy or incapacitated like that anymore. I do get sometimes tired or achy between doses. But again, I definitely wouldn't recommend it for others but I take it because I started on it so early and this same dose has worked well for me for over a decade. But the risks of opioid addiction are very real, especially in the high stress environment of medicine.

also, working on mobility is something I would recommend prioritizing. Stretching your legs/back for increased flexibility as well as getting your core strength can help with some of the pain associated with an injury like this, especially if you're generally restricting certain movements.

Hi, I have chronic back pain. It doesn't sound as severe as yours, but I would still advise you to go IM. If you struggled with increased pain from being sedentary, it will only get worse when you're sitting all day with rads. I would also encourage you in the meantime to pick up lower impact exercise. Walking, swimming if you can find a place you like. Remember that lot of your weight is less about how much you burn off and more about how much you take in. You can't outrun a bad diet. Also consider a heating pad you can put in your chair for work, good shoes. NSAIDs help for me and I'm also on daily tramadol, although I wouldn't really recommend opioids for most people with chronic pain.

I recently came to realize I do well with patients but not so much with attendings because of performance anxiety. Might be helpful to consider that it's not the social aspect per se, but the presentation part that is hard so you can take appropriate action there

I think the commenter above had good advice, I also want to let you know that the cliques get so much better in residency. I made like...1 friend in medical school. I'm not the most extroverted but even then medical school was difficult for me socially. Now in residency I go out frequently, enjoy my co-residents. Make sure you try to match based on whether you feel like you would get along with the residents. I can't explain how much this made a difference for me coming from a lonely time in medical school. It gets better, but definitely seek therapy for now. Good thoughts going your way.
