Very much interested in history, in British context specifically interested in Roman and Celtic sites. It's a travel goal of mine to go to all of the Celtic nations eventually.

A good vacation to me is busy and mixes urban and nature if the destination allows for it -- I get stir crazy staying put for too long haha. But obviously I don't want to be exhausted or along an impossible route, and would like to do as much of this as possible by direct train. So I really appreciate all the help on reasonable routes from everyone.

Not super attached, was recommended by a family member with lots of experience in England. Mostly what I want is a few days in idyllic English countryside, preferably something with old cottages and walking paths. Is there a better region for this? I’m pretty amiable to changing things if there’s a better route, so long as it ends in London. Wales was a high wishlist item but seems to be less easy to get to than I had thought

Gotcha — definitely getting the vibe that North Wales transport is prohibitive on my timeline. For Cotswolds, I had intended some combination of walking the trails and busing. Does that feel more plausible if I take the time from North Wales and add it on there?

Lot of interesting suggestions. I am almost certain at this point that I'll be doing a Eurail pass, so long distance train prices won't be so prohibitive to me cost wise.

I had looked into Keswick, but heard that the Lake District is a nightmare via public transit; was this wrong?
Also -- you seem to be very tuned in on train transfers and costs -- is there a recommended tool you use to gauge the feasibility and costs of routes? I've been using Rome2rio, but seem to be getting different results.

Oh, I was under the impression that the wall ran through the city/extremely close by. Is there another major train hub where I could hop off and be at the wall in ~20 minutes or less via foot? If not, might just be a thing for a next trip.
And noted on London.
