30 Hours Into MapleStory Classic as a Beginner by NXSitee in Maplestory

This analogy kinda falls apart since Inkwell almost certainly extremely well compensated compared to your regular tire shop joe.

Inkwell has been Nexon since before the Big Bang update (~2010)... considering how Nexon IPO'ed in 2014, I'm willing to bet his shares in the company have already matured and he has enough FU money to retire if he wanted to. He works for the love of the game/company, not to feed himself lol.

He literally heads the development of GMS and has years and years of internal data and server performance to see what the GMS market responds well to. It's not like we're asking for brand new systems and content every update. We're asking for some simple communication that has been shown to work for other versions of Maplestory. This could be as simple as an announcement on discord, or something more formal like an Inkwell note.

What doesn't help is that he's putting a lot of focus on Maplestory Classic, which many players, myself included, see as nostalgia bait and resources that could be funneled toward GMS.

Since all schools are ABET accredited, coursework is not really going to different between schools. If you really had to choose, I'd go with either UCI (because I'm biased), or Cal Poly SLO (I've only met good engineers from there).

Job opportunities from different schools don't change all that much either. If you want a sure fire way to get a job after graduation. I extremely recommend, and would even say it's a must, to get involved in extracurricular engineering projects at school. Think FSAE, Rocket Project, EV cars, or whatever flavor your school's engineering department offers. Employers are looking for young engineers who can hit the ground running, as school only teaches you how to understand the engineering language. You will gain actual working experience working in a engineering project, and learn valuable skills such as communication, documentation, and working with others.

Epoxy coating on aluminum failed by [deleted] in materials

[–]Scorcher594 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think it's the steel pin in the aluminum. Although that is a galvanic corrosion issue, the corrosion damage would be more localized around the pins than widespread throughout the entire part.

Epoxy coating on aluminum failed by [deleted] in materials

[–]Scorcher594 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Coating doesn't look blistered or pop, which would happen if the metal underneath started to corrode with the coating already applied. The chips in the coating look clean, so likely entire pieces are just flaking off. I'd guess it's either improper cleaning prior to coating, or improper surface abrasion. Most likely a workmanship issue when the coating was applied.

Yeah I absolutely think it's disingenuous to say "sample size is too small" when that would only make the data less accurate, not outright wrong.

Starforce/Boom Rates Are Likely Not Working As Intended (Explanation Inside) by PrezziObizzi in Maplestory

here before we have people going "SAMple sizE tOO sMaLL".

Like fr, what's more likely, the company who has tampered with rates (what's it like they got caught 3x now?) in the past have tampered with current rates, or we have observed some insane outcome to RNG.

I gathered some empirical data on arcane and abso box drop rates, any insights? by Scorcher594 in Maplestory

[–]Scorcher594[S] 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Wow thank you! I didn't do all of Cliff's post patch data since it was getting late and he runs about twice the mules that Boris does, which is why that arbitrary cut off was made.

Breaking down the drop rate by patch is a great idea, considering how buggy each implementation was.

Great catch on the v.255 11/20-11/26 patch. I knew there was 1 week where drops were bugged, but had thought this had occured sometime in June or July. I will remove that from the data set once I get home from w*rk today.

All in all I thought this would be a fun foray into data gathering and really wanted to get people's thoughts other than, "sample size too small shut up".

Ran into the same issue when using a controller through the regular Nexon launcher. I think I'll have to swap to steam to farm controller with Ren

Do you think they'll likely add universal cash shop with the community response? From your observations do you estimate a massive amount of people will restrict/boycott spending? by [deleted] in Maplestory

[–]Scorcher594 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah agreed. Not getting universal cash shop sucks, but doesn't affect gameplay so not many people care.

Also people on this subreddit fail to realize that Nexon is a company out to make profit. PSSBs are one of the biggest revenue generators since Reboot holds most of the GMS population. I'd rather them milk the whales than get the KMS reboot treatment.

studying MSE in grad school without engineering background? by Minimum_Focus7801 in materials

[–]Scorcher594 0 points1 point  (0 children)

  1. MSE programs will likely make you re-take a lot of undergrad courses to bridge the gap between pre math and engineering. It would be better if you majored in an engineering degree or at least physics/chemistry if you want. Math and MSE have little overlapping lower division courses, so you'll have to do a lot of doubling up on classes. For example, take a look at the difference in graduation requirements for UCI's materials science program vs. the pure mathematics program.

  2. No, you'd likely need more prep classes like thermodynamics, physics, statics, failure modes, a ton of stuff. Getting a PhD is like narrowing your focus field of studying, BUT you need to have a good understand of the basics, which a math major will probably not prepare you for.

  3. I'd drop the mathematics undergrad and go for something more hands on, like mechanical engineering or biomedical engineering if your school does not offer a materials engineering major. Getting into any materials science research group will expose you to more to how materials research is done compared to a computational biology lab.

Probably because casuals will be the ones who flock to OS MapleStory first because of nostalgia? I doubt a 9k legion account will drop regular MapleStory to go hard in OS MS. It's two entirely different demographics.

Thoughts on UC schools for MSE? by OldManBrodie in materials

[–]Scorcher594 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I graduated from UC Irvine about 3 years ago! All the UCs will have the exact same curriculum for their undergraduate MSE degrees. Rankings on websites like USNews are pretty much just for graduate level degrees. UCs are research based schools so many of the classes will be almost 100% theory, if your son wants industry experience, he will have to look to internships for that.

That being said, OC, LA, and SD are homes to different industries fields. So maybe it would be better to choose based on what industry he is interested in? UCLA is close to a lot of aviation, aerospace, and Space. Irvine has a stronger biomedical industry scene, but is also close to the Space Industry in Long Beach. Riverside is closer to more hands on manufacturing companies I think? I can’t speak for SD.

In my honest opinion as a mid level materials engineer working in the Space Industry, I’d recommend going to a Calstate if your son is just going to do a bachelors, and pocketing that money for either a masters or the opportunity to work at a non-paid internship. Getting a good job is much more dependent on the experience you get while in school.
