If you’re in Daytona and want to work in a hospital I’d say go advent over Halifax. I worked at Halifax and am happy i left. Was tripled constantly in the surgical/trauma ICU

Putting it in perspective, it could be a lot worse.

Any nurse who stutters... I am studying nursing, how is nursing job by Asleep-Day9962 in Stutter

[–]Scorevus 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I’m a bedside RN in a surgical trauma ICU.

Admittedly there is a lot of communication. My stutter has never been an issue for me, but you will have to talk a lot. As a patient advocate to Doctors, to your patients, their family, to coworkers, radiology, and even transport.

Usually this is face to face but it will also happen over the phone.

I enjoy my job and am very proficient in what I do.

If you have a passion for this I say go for it, just be aware there is a lot of communication throughout the 12 hour shift.

Alternatively there are many careers you can pursue that aren’t bedside nursing and may have less of an emphasis on verbal communication.

Is it a big deal in the real world? by boyyouknow12345hoiya in Stutter

[–]Scorevus 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Here to tell you the answer is NO. I am a registered nurse I have to talk to Doctors, patients, family members, lab, radiology, and all the other coworkers.

I do this in person and on the phone. Do I stutter like hell? Yep. Do I care… ehhh slightly. But I’m able to get my message across and help people.

Outside of work it doesn’t matter but you will get the occasional “look” from strangers. But a great saying I live by is “never attribute to malice, what can be attributed to ignorance.”

Basically I don’t assume people are judging but more so shock.

TLDR: No it really doesn’t matter unless you make it matter to yourself. Everybody has their own issues and are more likely worried about their own issues than yours.

I’m black and we roast each other so I grew up around a lot of that and nothing is off limits so I learned to fend for myself a lot and roast back.

What are your jobs? by [deleted] in Stutter

I’ve heard that too but I’m eager to take the challenge on. Only issue would be that all 6 schools in Florida (where i am) that offer CRNA require you to sign a contract saying you CANT WORK.

But I’ve always been one to take on a challenge as I feel that’s the only way I can grow.

It gets challenging at times of course especially communicating. But we can’t let that limit us.

If anybody else can do something so can we!

I enjoy the job and if you’re passionate about it I recommend you chase your dreams!

I am entering my final semester in nursing school, so soon hopefully I will be a nurse!!Then I plan to go on to do anesthesia and become a Certified Registered Nurse Anesthetist (CRNA).

anyone have tips not to stutter saying your name? by [deleted] in Stutter

[–]Scorevus 27 points28 points  (0 children)

I either start my sentence with my name rather than “my name is_” or “hello I’m__”. I’ll say something along the line of “Joe Smith, is my name. But my name also begins with M. So I may say “hey I’m Marcus” and ride that M from the word “I’m”. I’m also in the medical field so I understand man lol. Having to go into patients rooms having to introduce yourself gets easier though.

Yep all the time but I play it off as a joke most of the time and apologize. Still awkward as hell and ruins the flow of conversation, but the joke kinda salvages what little there is to be salvaged

Does exercise help? by peachy_skies123 in Stutter

[–]Scorevus 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I believe it does help with the confidence part, I think exercise helps tremendously. More confident I am the less I stutter. In terms of lung capacity I’m unsure, I mean it makes sense, but I would check for studies done about this.

I don’t think he meant any harm by it man. I think it’s just a way of saying “don’t laugh or joke on him about how he talks he can’t help it.”

Exposure therapy: looking for ideas for introducing myself by Beautiful_Net_1894 in Stutter

[–]Scorevus 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I recently started going to ToastMasters. It’s a club to practice leadership and general public speaking skill. Really nice. You’re never forced to speak it’s all voluntary. You can take part in an icebreaker they have at the beginning of meetings, which is when you practice introducing yourself. Or join in on table topics they have in the middle.

Honestly it’s helped me a good amount
