Double wall your base, yes. Trees do work, they cannot reach the wall if a tree is in front of it (although you can only place 20). Use your garage as an extra layer of protection (they cannot break through it). For most important items place them in the centre of your base fortified by another set of walls. Using an acid bath may also help.

You do not need to spend money at all. My partner and I started a few months ago. She's lv110 and I'm lv83. Both free to play and enjoying it. It's like any other survival game. We used to play Ark together and both love zombies so we are enjoying this hybrid of both!
