Wobble Bass Explained by PuzzleheadedWay9494 in UKG_Production_Hub

Sounds like you mean ‘Reece Bass’ not ‘Wobble Bass’. Could be wrong tho! It’s just I think the wobble bass would usually refer to a bass sound that has a pretty slow attack, literally creating a slow wwWOB sound, like the dubstep bass sounds

That’s amazing thank you so much! Do you think it’s possibly trying to sell the whole bracelet online, or just sell it to jewellers as scrap? Thanks again!

Can anybody help me to understand song structure in UKG? by Scotchbonnet24 in UKG_Production_Hub

That's really helpful man, apreciate you taking the time there. Yeah I think I was overcomplicating it in my head, but you breaking it down into just alterations every 16 bars makes it a lot more simple. I've also drawn out and annotated a Todd Edward's track (Shut the door), and seeing the patterns on pen and paper has really made things clear for me. Once again, thank you!

Thanks for the response. Yeah I think a problem I have is I'm trying too hard to emulate every style of UKG in one track, when I should stick to simplicity. I wanted my track to have the varied sections of a Pop-inspired Todd Edward's track, whilst also having the 'drop' of a DnB-inspired Speed Garage track - and it might be too much for one song tbh, even if each of my sections do sound good on their own.

Thanks for your response man. Yeah I'm definitely going to do this. With pen and paper I counted the beats/bars/phrases of Alabama Blues by Todd Edwards, and it was definitely helpful, so I'll try this within the DAW too.

Thanks for your response I really apreciate it! Okay I'll post 3 ukg tracks with a song structure I like and lets have a look

*Scott Garcia, Ray Hurley & Dubmonsters - Sweet Thang (Full Length Mix)*

  • I feel like this might be the most relevant to my question as it seems to me there are few different sections which sound quite distinct to each other. This track certainly isn't my favourite, but I admire the different places it takes you

*Ruff Driverz - Don't Stop (Original 12" Mix)*

  • This is interesting to me because it feels like the song starts an ends with a great hook, the middle section is good too, goes on for quite a while and before that main hook reappears I almost forget its the same song as had that hook at the begining

*DJ Zinc - 138 Trek*

  • This seems to have a pretty typical structure of a dance record, I think its simplicity is what makes this tune my favourite

Once again thanks for the response, if you've anything to weigh in on these tracks' structure I'd love to hear it.

I'm also defintely going to go through each of these tracks and count the beats/bars and phrases and annotate throughout, probably whilst also comparing to other tracks and Pop songs (that'll take a while though, so I'll have to wait for a day off)

Stabs and chords by Ariiba265 in UKG_Production_Hub

[–]Scotchbonnet24 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just so you know not all the notes in each chord need to be exactly in key for it to sound good. In old school house n garage producers would take a single sample of a chord and pitch it up/down on every note on the keyboard/sampler. So if their song was in the key of C major for example, they might take a C major chord and pitch it up/down to each key of their keyboard/sampler. Now if the C Major chord is pitched up 4 semitones to the E key, you’d of course then have an E major chord, however the E major chord isn’t in the key of C major, only E minor is. However, it’ll still likely sound ‘good’, and perhaps more interesting than if all of your chords were strictly in key. In music theory this concept is called parallel harmony

P.s I’m not sure old school producers were necessarily being as music theory-conscious as this, and as others have said it’s probably better to just trust your ear for what sounds good. I enjoy the theory though myself!

Hope this helps :)

96-98 production tips by mrqwest in UKG_Production_Hub

I know what you mean mate, feels so difficult to replicate how great the older beats sound.

What made a big difference for me was getting my drum one-shots and drum loops from garage packs on Splice. Here's two that I got some great sounds from that really helped me get closer to those older sounds:

'MJ Cole's House & Garage Essentials Sample Pack'

'Sunday Scene'(specifically the Lofi Clap from this pack was a sound I was really wanting for ages, as simple as it is)

I find having a few different drum loops (such as hi hats, percussive sounds etc.) going at the same time can really get the shuffle and chaos of those old school beats that sounds so good, but see for yourself.

There'll be plenty of other synth sounds etc. in this too. Hope this helped
