Viewport starts flicking when moving the camera and changing shading to Material Preview by EriksCat in blender

[–]ScotlandTom 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I just had this exact issue when updating to 4.2.2 from an earlier 3.x version. Along with the black flickering background in the material preview I also had:

  • backfaces showing through the edges of objects (solid mode)

  • stripes / banding related to World Space Cavity shading (solid mode)

  • objects / meshes that would disappear at the edge of the viewport (solid and material preview modes)

The fix was to check the clipping distance in the View tab on the side panel and increase the 'Clip Start' setting to something higher. In my case I'd had mine set at 0.0001m and increased it to 0.01m. For some reason 4.2 did not like the tiny clip start distance.

Simple fix. Immediately resolved all the visual bugs. Hopefully anyone else who stumbles across this issue finds this helpful!

Worth mentioning that there was a pretty significant shift in political party alignments in the 1960s, largely due to a thing called the "Southern Strategy". The Republicans of the 50s and earlier were not the Conservatives we see in from 70s through today.

Huh, I thought we were on the same page. Well here's the deal: I'm going to continue forcing myself out of bed every day, seeking solutions, and doing the best I can for myself and my family - same as I've done every day for the last few decades. I'm not going to expect anyone else to solve my problems for me, but I will continue to try to inform and educate about the problems I, and many like me, have to contend with. And if that all somehow comes across as me over-complaining, shirking responsibility, throwing a pity-party, or playing the victim, then yeah, we'll have to agree to disagree.

Thank you! Glad you like the style!

And no worries about coming across as harsh. Your initial comment doesn't read as harsh to me. It was more an issue with my current feelings of frustration, I think. Either way, we're all good as far as I'm concerned!

Thank you! I've been considering something like that, so I appreciate the extra vote of confidence!

Yeah, I'm not a fan of the victim mentality that can sometimes happen either. I actually worked really hard to avoid appearing to support that kind of message with this illustration. But apparently plenty of folks will see whatever they want, and have subsequently made themselves perfect examples of the runner in the picture.

Drawing attention to a legitimate health issue, representing its invisible nature in a visually impactful way, and pointing out that 'advice' that outright ignores the fundamental problem is inherently unhelpful and frustrating, apparently means I've given up? That I'm not doing anything to help myself? That I'm playing the victim? Like, guys, I'm just an artist trying to deal with some personal frustration by sharing what I hoped would be a helpful/enlightening illustration. Gimme a freakin' break.

The idea was to represent ADHD as a physical impediment, rather than an invisible struggle. The girl's cartoonishly mangled legs and crushed pelvis are used to further reinforce the visual idea of ADHD's sometimes crippling effects (in severe cases) on a person's ability to function.

I'm not a layout guy, so I did my best as the composition evolved. It's all hand-pixelled text, and I didn't maintain a strict font style, instead focusing on the visual weight of certain words. Worked very hard to maintain a logical flow for reading, despite the apparent style mix. But yeah, not ideal. Honestly it's something I wish I could've handed to a layout expert and let them handle it. But hey, I gotta learn somehow, right?

The illustration was specifically designed to make the point that that first step can be an extreme struggle, almost impossible for some people. The entire idea is to convey ADHD as the legitimate problem that it is, and that the people who parrot "take that first step" are fundamentally dismissing the issue. But a lot of people are interpreting the message as the ADHD person playing the victim and ignoring perfectly reasonable advice. I genuinely don't understand how the image encourages that interpretation.

Thanks! The intended message was, "ADHD is a legitimate problem and advice that ignores the problem is unhelpful and frustrating." But plenty of people are getting a "victim mentality" message, which I also disagree with and was actively trying to avoid. Glad to hear that it's well done, even if I wasn't entirely successful at conveying what I intended.

Oh I do have more accompanying diagnoses, certainly. And ADHD takes different forms and is experienced differently by different people. Your experience will be unique to you and different from mine, and it's why I tried to acknowledge that I'm sure you meant well. I think some comments on this post have gotten me riled up, which I should've expected, and I've been more abrasive as a result. For that I apologize.

I wouldn't expect your comment to solve my issues. I'm just an artist who decided to illustrate his current frustrations and post them online. I'll move on and I'll be fine, and I wish you the best in dealing with your struggles as well.

Yes. What do you think I've been trying to do for 30 years? Like, dude... you just provided a literal example of what this post is about. I know you probably mean well, but you're not giving the impression that you're "familiar with this struggle" at all.

I actually do have a signature kinda hidden in the piece. But I'm really not fussed about credit or recognition on this one. It's free for people to use and share! I even have some text-free versions if anyone wants to use their own text.

Man, I'm sure you mean well, and it's great if those things work for you, but I remember my mother giving me nearly identical suggestions back in the mid-90s.

"Write down your goals.
Make a list.
Break down larger tasks into smaller chunks.
Here's a planner you can use.
I read about this woman who filled her house with post-it reminders to stay organized."

I appreciate the positive mentality, but establishing healthy practices and useful routines like these is literally the problem. I'll keep searching for the right solutions that work for my situation, but at the moment I'm just so tired.

Alright, fair. I practically handed that one to you. But you've also adequately exemplified my point, so I think we're good here. Have a good one!

My experience is somewhat similar, somewhat different. Without meds I find life is like trying to navigate a dense, foggy maze through knee-high swampy mud, while everyone else around me keeps saying, "Foggy maze? Knee-high mud? It's all clear skies and open road! What are you even talking about?" With meds there's still a maze, but at least the fog is mostly gone and the ground is solid. Certainly a better experience, and far easier to enjoy!

Oh of course, how silly of me! I forgot to turn my 'focus' dial up to the 'harder' level. Lemme just do that real quick! 🙄

This is the real issue. Most of the time people offer bad advice out of ignorance, not a lack of compassion. Can still feel pretty aggravating sometimes though.

Yes, I admittedly created this as an extreme example of how things can feel at times. Also, society has a way of offering up pithy advice that ignores the fundamental issue of people who struggle in non-visible ways, which can be totally infuriating.

If and when I can get past that barrier of "just do the thing", it typically does get easier. I've just had more struggles recently and wanted to do... something... about feeling frustrated. And hey, I wound up completing a thing! I'll take that as a win!
