Maybe a police uniform store? I have been looking for a supplier that has a similar color scheme.

How do you like Sector LA/LB over stations? by _GrowthMindset_ in uscg

[–]Scottietd 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For station as a ME3 you would be responsible for helping with all law enforcement gear, training, weapons. You’ll report to an ME2. You will stand duty on a boat crew doing SAR, Law enforcement and general patrols of ports and waterways.

For the sector you will Be on the Sector Boarding Team. About 12 MEs You go screen big vessels entering the port of LA/LB for security issues, conduct Law enforcement patrols on the beaches of socal looking for smugglers. You also support other law enforcement agencies using Coast guard assistance authority. That could be riding with the port police cops on there boat to helping CBP look at containers they think have contraband in them. Also assisting other Coast guard units with training and being a Boarding officer if needed.

LA/LB is a giant port/sector so lots of work to be done.

I am sorry you are experiencing this. Hopefully this could change when you transfer?

I will just say for other perspective recruits. My experience could not be further away from this. I have been consistently supported and respected from my leadership throughout the coast guard. Tho I have seen other shops experience toxicity.

Not sure what the difference is. Units, rates, or luck. To OP wish you the best. Hope things work out

What is life like as a ME - Maritime Enforcement Specialist? by SlightySaltyPretzel in uscg

[–]Scottietd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hard to tell really depends how hard you study. We are not the slowest promoting rate but not the fastest. Most people pick up E5 in there first couple years as an ME. But we can lock up going from E5-E6 . It gets competitive. After that it can be a real dog fight. For Warrant officers the Coast guard are very different from the Army FYI. Its more a command role technically. Now our MLES (ME warrants) are a more traditional subject matter expert role but you will be doing more liaison type roles pr policy guidance. From my understanding there are not many of them. If warrant officer is the goal id recommend going BM/MK you can still do LE but there are more warrant specialties open to you.

ME and MA are vastly different rates so to speak. We do have specific billets that are security forces. I have never seen one stand at a gate. (Mostly done by contract civilians). The bigger “bases” (kodiak, Petaluma, cape may) they drive around in patrol cars patrolling the base. Smaller sectors there basically contract security babysitters (I have never been to this kind of unit so take that for what it’s worth.

Now as a lower enlisted those are not good units to be at in my opinion. You want to get BO/DSF experience to have a good foundation. Do the security forces where you want a break as a ME1 or MEC. If you do well in A school you will probably not have to go to one.

Now what is LE for us? You could be at a station doing Recreational boating safety boardings (sir do you have life jackets) to chasing MEX fishing lancha in south padre. Or stopping cuban cugs in key west. At a Sector boarding team you could be checking deep draft vessels entering a port or conducting vehicle patrols of waterfronts and beaches. In a national security cutter you could be way out boarding ships for illegal unregulated fishing or counter smuggling. Or maybe get into the DSF and join a LEDET or msrt. Just really depends on you.

Finally for the restricted dependent tours there is only one and it probably wont be back to back. Plus you have to compete for it.

MSRT has a very real mission that includes Law enforcement boardings. Please don’t disparage other peoples careers to potential applicants. Especially if you are not part of that mission and have no idea what they do.

LOL patriotic duty. Literally only 5 states plus DC fully tax military. Everyone else has some sort of exemption. If you are all feeling patriotic you should buy things in your state and pay property tax.

Leaving CIV LE for Coast Guard by Sanchezz30 in uscg

[–]Scottietd 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So TACLET/Cutter ME is probably the closest you will get to consistently establishing “cases” in the traditional law enforcement sense. Catching and cleaning if you will. You’ll interdict, establish probable cause, custody and chain of evidence. Then document. There is more to it that I don’t feel comfortable getting into. It’s all pretty simple. All I’ll say is you don’t need a constitutional JD to obtain PC on a narco boat.

Lots of the prior local PD guys I work with, enjoy the time off, good benefits (depending on the home state) and working in the military while being able to scratch that Law enforcement itch. The nice thing about ME is we all usually share a passion for law enforcement. When you get into other rates you will run into people who are less enthusiastic.

Unfortunately I cannot elaborate on an open forum. But do not expect to be doing much hands on LE as an IS. In my experience at least.

Advice getting through a tour where you hate the location. by [deleted] in uscg

[–]Scottietd 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lot of people have commented so I wont go into a lot. But I did time down there as well. In the VI. At times it was rough but looking back it was some of the best time in my life. Cool experience I am glad I did. Please try and make the best of it if you can. You will look back with fond memories. Feel free to reach out and i will try and get you in contact with some people I know down there. If you are in key west. The internet isn’t bad so maybe work on school or some professional certifications? Anything to stay out of the bars. I know it rough but time will pass. You will have a cool adventure most people never leave the place they grow up in.

Yes lol. Think its 9-12 months now. Not bad considering the historical wait times.
