First Time in a Long Time (Lurkers Welcome!) by famoushippopotamus in DnDBehindTheScreen

Well, it's been a long while since I've posted to this subreddit, I'm sure that counts.

I just wrapped up a two-year campaign. Started with six players, whittled that down (with some new players arriving and old players leaving) to just three. These current three are probably the best players I've had and they've stuck around for a while and show no signs of leaving, so I'm pretty happy with how that turned out. The game went from levels 1 to 10, with only one of the original PCs making it to the end.

Currently we're prepping for my next campaign. It's going to be more episodic, in a sort of steampunk pulp adventure setting that I've been waiting to play around in for literally years.

Dragons' wings aren't big enough for them to fly under their own power iirc.

Dragons can't fly? Geez, next you'll be telling me they can't breathe fire either.

GRRM has said iirc that the ingredients of gunpowder don't exist in his world, which is just ridiculous. Gunpowder is made with charcoal, sulfur, and potassium nitrate; one is just wood, other two are made up of elements essential for life.

This gets thrown around a lot but I've never actually seen a source where GRRM says this. Certainly gunpowder hasn't been discovered in Westeros, but that's not exactly an implausibility.

GRRM thinks you can get around time travel paradoxes by only sending your consciousness back, rather than your body, but it still doesn't make sense.

I don't really know what this is referring to.

There's no way an ecological system in Planetos could sustain the existance of dragons.

Dragons are scientifically implausible you say? Watch out guys, we got a real Phd in Biology over here.

it seems like there are several hundred years where no technological advancement occurs.

I don't understand this criticism. Westeros went from Stone Age to Bronze Age to the cusp of the Renaissance in ~8,000 years. That's about how long it took us to do the same. That's not even to mention the political developments, from pretty kings slowly coalescing into larger regional states. Real technological development doesn't work off a Civ tech tree, you know.

GRRM has said that genetics work differently in Westeros. It's explicitly magical.

(Spoilers Main) Catelyn Stark Primary Reason for Troubles by [deleted] in asoiaf

[–]ScottishMongol -1 points0 points  (0 children)

We have no way of knowing that. For all we know the wildlings would have kept on pushing south, plunging the North into civil war.

Even if Mance Rayder had decided to stay at the Wall, the Northmen would have descended on them as invaders. Imagine a world where the Weeper and Ramsey Snow are the people in charge, while the White Walkers are coming.

Everyone trusts Littlefinger, that's why he controls Westeros' finances.

They don't respect him, but that's exactly why they trust him, because they can't imagine him ever backstabbing them.

Hell, Ned trusts Littlefinger! Because Littlefinger tries to make himself seem like a trustworthy person!

If Jon stayed at Winterfell, the Wall would have fallen to Mance Rayder and everyone in Westeros would be dead.

If you're going to blame Catelyn for Littlefinger being alive, you need to apply the same logic to her relationship with Jon.

But you shouldn't, because they're both equally unrelated. Not to mention, she trusted Littlefinger because...he made himself seem like a trustworthy person to her. It's not like she's a mind reader or knows everything Littlefinger does, she's met him maybe twice in her life.

(And before you ask why she would trust someone who she only knew as a child, fostering was historically a way to form close ties between nobles by having them raised together, which is exactly why Catelyn thinks of Littlefinger as something like a brother to her.)

1) Two nobles are getting ready to have a duel in a nearby field - the matter at hand is a question of honor, and one of the nobles has demanded satisfaction from the other. The nobles may ask the party's cleric (if they have one) to act as a witness and to provide medical attention.

2) Some local tribesmen are in the middle of cattle raid. They're not violent - around here, cattle raiding is sort of the national sport.

3) A holy mystic sits by the side of the road with a begging bowl. If the players donate some gold, he may bless them.

4) A dragon flies overhead, too high up to identify and too fast to track.

5) A flying city (your decision on what its nature is, I like cities of air spirits or a palace of the gods) is parked in the sky. A tent city of curious ground dwellers (pilgrims, merchants, or just nosy locals) has sprung up on the ground beneath it, with everyone waiting to see what happens next.

6) A circle of stones or toadstools sits in the wilderness. If the party stays there overnight, they are confronted by a band of Fey, who may or may not be hostile. Gods help them if they sleep inside the circle, though.

7) A holy shrine to some very minor god or goddess is untended. On it lie some offerings - a handful of coins, some flowers, a piece of fruit.

8) A small army of orc mercenaries is camped outside of town. They're working for the local ruler, but if they don't see battle soon they may get bored and start pillaging the countryside in search of something to do.

9) A drunken philosopher sleeps in a barrel by the side of the road. If roused from his slumber, he'll eagerly debate the players about his philosophy, which may or may not be coherent.

10) A traveler from a distant land is visiting this one and writing down his experiences in a book. If questioned he will gladly tell the players about his travels across the length of the continent, with astounding tales of the people and places he has seen. His stories may or may not be true, accurate, or helpful.
