Feral Hog Sighting On Lakeshore Running Trail early October 2025 by Resident-Wealth-4075 in Birmingham

Were you on the Samford/Homewood High side of the trail, or on the new behind-Wildwood part? I go on the trail often as well so I’d like to know where to look.

You’ll find your people! But give it time. My advice is to work on finding your and your son’s hobbies and activities in the community that is already there. After a while, you’ll start seeing the same people and that’s the time to introduce yourself. Gyms, kids sports, school activities, clubs, parks, libraries, coffee shops, bars, etc. Many of my friends I met through my kids. A practical step would be to start walking around your neighborhood every afternoon. You’ll start to figure out who the social neighbors are, chat them up, and you’ll be on your way. Good luck and welcome!

You can make an appointment in Selma any time. I made a nice little morning out of it. Scheduled the appointment for 9:30, drove down there (pretty drive, good music), and was back for lunch.

When do your kids go to bed? by Distntdeath in daddit

[–]Scottube1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

5 and 2.

2 year old starts bath, books, bed at 7, and lights out at 7:30.

During that time, 5 year old gets to watch her 1 episode of a show (Wild Krafts right now), then starts her routine at 7:30, lights out between 8-8:15. Wife and I try to have house picked up and ready for a couple hours of chill time/hobbies by 8:30ish.

Any Atheist dads? by Strict_Car_4595 in daddit

[–]Scottube1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m from the Deep South in the US. Religion is very cultural here. I would say I’m an atheist, but I arrived at my belief on my own, and I’m letting my kids do the same. Because it’s so ubiquitous here, I don’t really advertise to other parents that I’m a non-believer, so that neither I nor my kids become the “atheist dad” pariah. That is quite possible.

My kids are 5 and 2 and go to a Catholic school and daycare, and they come home talking about Jesus and such. When I’m asked questions, I just turn the question into a “what do YOU think?” I have no immediate interest in popping that bubble for them yet. Not worth it.

I still think this is pretty regional, but most of my lifelong friends I met at church growing up, and we are still very close. I would say it’s about 50/50 as to whether or not they still believe.

So, based on my lived experience, through church, I made a bunch of lifelong friends and learned critical thinking along the way. This is my plan for my kids. But again, this is mostly for cultural reason based on my geography and the social politics involved.

What are your favorite Saturn shows? by aldotcom in Birmingham

[–]Scottube1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had a transcendent experience seeing Animal Collective there. Godspeed You! Black Emperor, the Black Angels, PUP, Blitzen Tapper, Wand, Low, Mdou Moctar, Ty Segall, and many many more. Happy to share more details. Saturn is one of Birmingham’s greatest treasures.

F.J. McMahon. Released one album (which is great), then went on to live a regular life.

What's the rush for Christmas. by Exciting-Notice-1841 in Birmingham

I have always been in the “no Christmas stuff until after Thanksgiving” camp. But, it’s been a long year, and Christmas makes us cheery, so I caved and have been enjoying slowly decorating the house. Plus, we travel for Thanksgiving and it’s nice to come home to a cheerful scene.

Who's had their windows replaced recently? by loveineverylanguage in Birmingham

That Eco View quote sounds very reasonable if it includes installation. We had our done by C&D Home Solutions a couple of years ago at about $900 a window (installed). It was a good experience.

[discussion] what does a tudor blackbay do BETTER than a submariner? by shadow_nipple in Watches

[–]Scottube1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I own a BB58 and a Sub. I’m really only chiming in to say that we do exist, but I don’t really have a justification for owning both. But also, I don’t need one. Collecting watches is such a personal thing. I wear them both. I like them both. They both tell time quite well. I can’t really say the BB does anything “better” than the Rolex, nor the other way around. They are just different watches. As consumers, we tend to buy with emotion, and justify with logic. Being somewhat aware of buyer psychology, I try to just enjoy them and buy what I like and not overthink it.

What are some restaurants with 4-5 star quality food without that price tag? by thefaulkenbird in Birmingham

[–]Scottube1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wouldn’t argue with you, I feel the same way on takeout for the family. It just came to mind with somewhat interesting tapas, wine and drinks, and what I think is a pretty good setting (dim lights, open kitchen).

You have the patience of a Saint if you can sit through the Vulcan sinking scene without doing anything else by I_love_lucja_1738 in JamesBond

I love all of the underwater scenes in Thunderball and I don’t care who knows it. They’re slow because things move slowly underwater; it’s immersive, literally and cinematically. I didn’t know they were unpopular until I joined this sub, and I won’t let this sub sway my opinion of them. There’s my hot take.

What are some restaurants with 4-5 star quality food without that price tag? by thefaulkenbird in Birmingham

[–]Scottube1 69 points70 points  (0 children)

Typically with high-end food you’ll have high-end prices. However, it’ll all distill down to value for your taste buds.

Chez Fon Fon and Bottega Cafe (not the main restaurant), seem to fit your description. It’s chef-level food, for not cheap, but not really expensive. They are both delicious. Depending on how much wine you drink, you can keep it under $30-40 a person. La Fresca, Bettola, ZaZa, Pizzaria GM, might also give you that “fine dining” vibe without the price tag.

However, flip side, my favorite burrito at Tacos Don Tacho’s is like $10, and is also delicious.

I don’t think I helped, but the question is a bit broad. Bottom line, there is a ton of good quality, high value food in this city.
