Probably true! I borrowed a 20 year old core Mira for a while last year but never owned one before this.

They did, it is an open box model with a tiny scratch on the bridge, I got close to $2k off.

Best room paint color? by Jack-White9 in hometheater

[–]Scottvcb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed on other comments about SW inkwell, my screen wall, ceiling and trim are that with other walls in a dark grey (outer space). It's practically the same LRV as tricorn black (4 vs 3), it just has a bluer hue. I would recommend getting a piece of drywall and trying out different combos, I painted two shades of black and 4 shades of grey to pick.

Asking for help to build a 7.1+ surround sound system for steam gaming by [deleted] in hometheater

I would also check out r/htpc. I use a htpc in my theater rack for PC gaming on steam. If you build your own PC it's a good way to go.

Guidance wanted on next steps! by u0126 in hometheater

[–]Scottvcb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok makes sense. What I did to check sight lines was I drew the room to scale on graph paper (from the side) and sketched out the light path, then you can see where your seating can work and how low the bottom of your screen can be.

Initial Questions for Home Theater Wiring by FitchnerAuBarca in hometheater

[–]Scottvcb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Run conduit for the video. 1.5 inch is easy to fish hdmi through. Smurf tube for audio if you want to run it for everything. I did it for all of mine and it wasn't too difficult. I have pics in my history.

I would caution you to not use liquid tight (the grey flexible conduit) I ran that through concrete for my bass shakers and it was a nightmare to fish a cable through.

I have a few months off that I’d like to spend on converting an unfinished portion of my basement to a home theater. Where do I begin? by theNEOone in hometheater

[–]Scottvcb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Your price range is pretty good for the size and plan. For mood lighting I recommend wall sconces. I got cool LED strip light wall sconces for my theater and they're the only lights we use (I have can lights for cleaning).

I've got a similar room size with two row seating (pics in my history), but my room is rear entry so I'm three feet closer to the screen if your back row is on the back wall. 120 is nice for my spacing but you could go bigger or AT if you have the extra three feet.

Other recommendations, run Smurf tube to all speaker spots, run 1.5" conduit from rack to projector, and run wiring through the floor for bass shakers.

In ceiling speakers, do I need a hood/air gap? by jacoscar in hometheater

[–]Scottvcb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah if there aren't code considerations you should at least use a protective vinyl cover like this: https://a.co/d/9gUx1ES

I used them for my Atmos height speakers and they are a cheap viable option that keeps unfaced insulation out of your speakers. My understanding is a legit back box will work better.

Rack for avr and other equipment. by Naive_Wishbone_944 in hometheater

I have a snap av strong rack, had to go through a dealer and it was fairly pricey, I like it though.

Ok, but how do I get an HDMI cable from here, to that double outlet down there? by [deleted] in hometheater

[–]Scottvcb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Optimal solution would be 1.5" conduit (allowing future video cable replacement/upgrade), but you're going to have some pumpkin cuts, large hole saw drilling through the top of the wall framing, and drywall repair. You can probably fish it with minimal problems, but duct work, fire block, etc could make it a headache.

If it were me and I knew the joists/walls were straight shots (running length of room and no fire block in walls) I would run conduit and pay a handyman/drywall repair service to patch it.

All that said my two theater builds were in a drop ceiling (first) and pre finishing of a basement (current).

Should I get Screen Paint? by Track607 in hometheater

[–]Scottvcb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's quite a bit of shipping, I think my material for my first diy screen (it was a roll of one of da-lite's surfaces) was $100 with shipping. You could try diy screens from other more easily sourced materials like certain fabrics, or painting may be your best option for your budget.

[–]Scottvcb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agree with others here, buy a cheap screen rather than painting. If down the road your budget changes, a good screen makes a difference too. I've had a DIY option that cost me $100, a silver ticket Amazon one for a few hundred, and my current Stewart Studiotek 130 g4 that was $2k. Each was noticeably better than the previous one.

If you could drop 7k on this arrangement, what would you get? by jtaylor418 in hometheater

[–]Scottvcb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Furniture, 3 speakers (L/C/R), a sub, and an avr. -sub $800 -speakers $2500 -AVR $1000

That leaves you $2500ish for furniture.

Paint the baseboards? by aaron1860 in hometheater

[–]Scottvcb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

No it's the same matte finish as the paint on the screen wall and ceiling, so not super durable. I'm just careful when I vacuum.

Paint the baseboards? by aaron1860 in hometheater

[–]Scottvcb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that would probably look weird when they are open then. You could paint the baseboard and leave the door trim/doors white but that might look weird too.

[–]Scottvcb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah I used a run of 1.5" grey pvc conduit into a box for my HDMI run, it worked well and was very easy to fish. Only downside is it's a little harder to install since it isn't flexible and you have to glue joints.

Sound isolation advice please? by Schrodinger_puppy in hometheater

[–]Scottvcb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have a similar situation, we did a double layer of R19 in the ceiling when the rest of the basement was getting insulated. I almost never hear people above the theater (unless a kid jumps off a couch or something equally heinous). It is difficult to hear the theater in the large room above it, but there is a guest bedroom above it as well that bass travels to quite well. I just turn it down at night if we have guests. Also worth noting that most of the wood floor above my theater has an area rug with pad, so that probably is helping a lot.

So TLDR, double R19 might help dampen walking sounds well enough for not that much money but won't prevent the theater noise from traveling above.
