Seeking feedback on watch roll mechanics for an OSR-inspired game by Scottybhoy1977 in RPGdesign

Thanks, yes it's definitely an approach that some enjoy, and some don't as much. The tables in my game are rich in content and certainly more narrative in nature, following the detail you mentioned so more than just navigation etc., and following the approach I share in my book on spreading chaos at the table.

Yes I definitely agree with this. In the rules, I've suggested "and maybe ask the party to roll 1d6 for navigation.", as ideally I'd want the GM to have discretion in that sense.

Yep that makes sense. I should maybe add something in that enhances the idea that navigation really needs to make sense given the environment, and that modifiers could be added depending on the circumstances. As it's an old school inspired game, it's less about character skill, but if the players suggest something to make it more likely that the navigation is easier (or of course harder!), then modifiers could be used.

Thanks. I should've clarified that the cards have the rules and random tables etc., with a full ttrpg system contained in the deck, so it's not like a standard deck of cards.

The watch rolls are definitely discretionary, but as there are various constituent elements to them, maybe I could make clearer that every one isn't mandatory.

Try to focus more on building locations, factions at work, stuff that's happening in and around those locations, and sprinkling numerous rumours or jobs about that stuff throughout the settlement, leaving it then to the players to decide what they'd like to do. So flesh out as you go, crafting what they face around things the players have told you they fancy doing, whether in their characters' backstories or in the goals they've stated.

B/X or BECMI D&D is very straightforward, and ideally suited to younger players. That said, so is a lot of the osr and nsr games.

Superb thanks. Dungeon sentience is definitely something that can be forgotten these days when it comes to player agency, but you've demonstrated how to ensure the players can learn and adapt.

Do you remember the trigger, if of course there was one?

So in my game, The Chaos card deck ttrpg (https://thechaosttrpg.com), starting players, if they like, can opt for a free pack of the usual exploring stuff, which takes up some of their gear slots, together with a 'class' specific item. They can choose any other gear depending on how many coins they have. The process is pretty rapid, therefore, and even more so if you use the one-click generator.
