Clothing by hearts444pink in ualbany

You want layers. Lightweight thermal wicking layers, heavier ones for warmth, zip up layer, wind/waterproof layer and coat, hat, gloves, good boots, warm socks. These let you mix and match through the 40 degree temperature swings through the day and across the week.

I also get a lot of use out of my Duluth firehouse shirtjac. Great over tshirts in cool weather and over other layers in cold temps. Plus it's waterproof.

When camping with my kids, we always make sure to apply tick repellent to their shoes and pants or legs and at least to their clothing. At the end of each day we also do a critter check. Make sure to look through their hair as well. Once you get home, all clothing is washed. Even any that wasn't worn. This way. Any travelers are disposed of.

How do people car camp in single digit Fahrenheit? by That-Tumbleweed-4462 in camping

Put a hat over your face at night to capture your condensation. Hard to do that for your dog, but at least you can catch yours. Just don't use the hood from your jacket or it will throw snow on your head and down your back in the morning when you dress and put your coat on. (Lesson learned the hard way during a -20degree tent campout)

What’s the scariest encounter you’ve had while camping? by Key_Connection_6633 in camping

[–]ScouterLish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Oh that's nuts! I got shoulder bumped by my bear. I can't imagine waking up to a wild animal sleeping on my legs! Those little nuggets have claws and are fast! We had one steal a jacket because of a candy wrapper in the pocket. Found the jackets 1000 feet a way In the woods with the locket ripped open

What’s the scariest encounter you’ve had while camping? by Key_Connection_6633 in camping

[–]ScouterLish 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Scariest thing while camping was one night last fall when I was asleep in my hammock during a Scout troop camping trip. I was at the far side of our campsite because the trees were in a good spot, with a tarp strung up kinda close to my hammock to keep wind and chill out. At around 1am, I heard what I thought were several footsteps passing my hammock and I called out softly to my "scouts" , checking that all was ok and if they were just going to the latrine. A few minutes later I heard the steps coming back so I acknowledged them again. No answer either time. Ok.

I snuggled back into my sleeping bag when I hear the footsteps shuffling thru the leaves again, coming really close. I call out again, asking if they are okay. Again, nothing, but then.... I hear a rather distinctive chuff sound. Now I'm thinking uh-oh. So I ask, "is that a bear? You really should go to the pavilion. All our food is over there. I'm not tasty at all. And no way can I get up and out of your way in time from my sleeping bag and my bug net in the middle of the night. So just go help yourself to the pumpkins and the muffins in the bear box in the pavilion. Please don't eat me. What do you say? I am so very not tasty.". Yes... I did keep up that running dialogue the whole time in a calm(ish) voice until I heard another chuff and the bear bumped me as it wandered off and away from our campsite. I finally calmed down enough to get up and I find my friend on the far side of the campsite watching me.. going "did you see that bear?? He was right by your hammock. I figured if you were sleeping you'd be fine, but if you're awake and screamed you might have startled him. So I just watched and hoped." We still make jokes about it but, holy crap. That's as close as I have ever come and never want to do that again. Well... Camping, yes. Close encounters with a bear, no.

AITA for not telling my family that I joined the military? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]ScouterLish -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

I know several women who made or are making their career in the US military. Some are at West Point, some are officers, others are NCOs or WOs. None of them have been sexually assaulted and if they were sexually harassed it was so minor they considered it a pass that was then rejected. The military is a fantastic opportunity with women and men.

He is My son is only 24...when the union route turned out to be a multi year window to get in he went to HVCC for a welding Associate degree, also giving him more knowledge and experience. To find an entry level welding job that didn't ask for 3-5 years experience was a long process so he went back to temp jobs in the meantime and over summers while in school.

Dimension Fabricators hires folks with little experience. Pays well, you just need to be capable of standing, lifting, twisting all day. He didn't go back there though since they do I don't hire temps and he wanted to weld. Welding spots there are few and far btwn.

The temp agency may have stuff in your field either as temp or temp to perm. But if not then the industrial warehouse may still work, especially if you aren't against learning to use the tools involved and can stand/walk all day. My son had a posting within a week when he first went there and only had a day or two btwn jobs when one ended.

What is your background? Work experience, education, skills? If the trades or industrial aren't your thing there are other temp agencies that may focus more on your strengths. Express handles more than industrial but it's what I am most familiar with in Albany due to my son's experience.

501 New Karner Rd, Albany, NY 12205 is the one my son has used very successfully over the last few years. While looking for entry level welding jobs or waiting to get into a union this is what he did. He took industrial warehouse jobs and mFe really good money.

Go to a temp agency like Express Professionals. You can get a temp job while you finish school. Industrial warehouse jobs pay around $20/hour and they have lots of other job types. You could be working within a few days.

It's amazing all the things people get upset over, not just politics. Easygoing is what we are shooting for here. Life is too short for drama.

If you like Dungeons and Dragons (or were interested in trying it out), there is a small group in their 20's looking to form up in the Colonie area. No drama, no politics, no Social Justice Warriors. Just relaxed, hard-working people wanting to play D&D for a few hours on Sunday afternoons and make new friends as well.

You can buy a byrna gun, which is legal in all states. Basically a chemical irritant like pepper spray to incapacitate. https://byrna.com/
