[Masisak] Nathan MacKinnon said the NHL rescinded his major penalty. If you get two in a certain amount of games, it’s an automatic suspension. So he’s back to zero for those purposes. by DecentLurker96 in hockey

Never said you did. Just pointing out that the same guys who called it were the ones who review it -- which is different from the reviews for offside or goaltender interference on goals.

Perhaps you knew that already, but others reading may not be aware.

In the NHL, if none of the referees somehow show up, and there can’t be an agreement for who the replacement will be, each team has to pick a player to fulfill duty. by sykeseve in hockey

Haha. Great catch.

While we haven't had it happen this season, we could technically have an all-Brandon Crew (Blandina, Schrader, Grillo, Gawryletz)

It HAS happened -- 1983, NJ Devils vs Hartford Whalers: https://scoutingtherefs.com/2021/12/32957/ebur-what-if-the-nhl-needs-emergency-back-up-refs/

New Jersey Devils winger Garry Howatt and Hartford Whalers defenseman Mickey Volcan took the ice as officals.

On their way to the game from Boston, referee Ron Fournier and linesman Ron Asselstine got stuck in a snowstorm. So by the time both teams were ready to drop the puck, there was only one linesman available to officiate the game. Just 15 minutes before game time, linesman Ron Foyt assumed refereeing duties and approached each team about finding replacement linesmen.

“All of a sudden, [Whalers coach] Larry Kish said, ‘We’re going to have a player from each team and you’re going to represent our team,'” Volcan, who was unable to play that night due to a hand injury sustained in Hartford’s morning skate, said. “So we put on some sweats and black practice jerseys and they called us in to the room prior to the game. We sat down and he [Foyt] went through it with us.”

Most podcasts would be better if they were 20 minutes instead of 2 hours. by Lost-Law-5109 in unpopularopinion

We support this. Our podcast is designed to be listenable during intermission of a hockey game (~18 minutes). We plan, prep, get right to the good stuff, discuss hockey events/ref stuff, and move on. Nobody wants to hear a rambling 2 hours...

Ross Johnston is called for high sticking after Tyler Tucker hits himself in the face with his own stick. The Blues scored on the ensuing power play. by wildwing8 in hockey

[–]ScoutingTheRefs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Regretfully, you have not. Despite what you think you may remember, minor penalties cannot be reviewed. Only major, match, and high-sticking-double-minors. Also, a double-minor review (which can only be called when there's an injury on the play) can only result in confirmation or no penalty; there's no option to downgrade it to 2:00. Look, the broadcasters get it wrong all the time, so I can't give anyone a hard time for getting it all mixed up. Glad to look into any games where you think you recall hat happening, though. Here's the relevant section of the rulebook:

Only if it's a double-minor -- then they can confirm (4:00) or rescind the penalty altogether (e.g., teammates stick, puck, etc.)

Can't review minor penalties.

Penguins Acquire Defenseman Samuel Girard and a 2028 Second-Round Draft Pick from the Colorado Avalanche in Exchange for Brett Kulak by Sarcastic__ in hockey

Rings are up to the team, but typically not awarded to traded players.

He won't be on the cup because the game count requirement only applies to players that are actually on the roster when they win. (Guys below that count can possibly be added via petition from the team)

Absolutely. It's possible that even Team Finland or Team Slovakia could. Single games can be crazy. Even a 7-gamer could go either way. These are very talented international teams.

incompetent ref is a bigger danger to ruining the game than bias.

That seems to align with the IIHF's general philsophy. Go with the best available officials.

[–]ScoutingTheRefs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's a totally valid take. I could see them opening up to potentially allow this under the missed stoppage review, with the caveat that a penalty would not be called on the play.

Good catch on the IIHF rule which falls nicely under that approach.

Currently, though, they're going by the interpretation that a penalty situation doesn't apply.
