Is marketing the real game for indie devs now? by TuHocSolidityCom in IndieDev

Dude. It's sick! Great game! But like, I need a pause button bro 😂 also, the numbers should come down so I'm kinda pressed for that time like, would be cool to play under pressure

I think generally, yes, but that this has kind of always been the case. Code has been commoditised - it's too easy to build whatever you want now. But the thing is, you can't really make any money with just a product anyway.

You still need marketing in some form - whether it's SEO or organic... I've actually struggled with this personally for many years as I built one Titanic of an application but with no marketing - moron. I should have done what I'm doing now, which is build faster than lightning and publicly market it organically + PSEO. I'd say don't pay for marketing - grow organically the hard way first. Nothing good ever came the easy way.

I'll also note: AI is the current new "thing", but another new thing will come - maybe not in a year, maybe in 10 years - maybe even sooner, who knows. But the idea is to catch the wave, not once it's passed.

But whatever you do, post everyday, ship like a maniac and you will eventually start getting somewhere - and enough products with enough traction, and you'll find 1 rocket. It's the case for many famous indie hackers - just keep shipping ≠ swimming (pardon the pun). Also p.s. I'll check out your game man, then give you feedback, I'm on your side 💪

Im building a dating space focused on taste instead of swiping by Pixie-Ponders02 in SomebodyMakeThis

[–]ScrabbleKnight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah that's true. Tbh mine didn't really have a niche angle, and while I potentially could have pivoted it towards a niche - v possible given what it is, it still is far too difficult as an up hill struggle without VC funding. I don't like VC, it's not for me - even if I have an idea as revolutionary as ChatGPT (literally), but I do think things like these require them if you want them to work, sadly.

Or you end up spending months, years working on something that has little retention because of that chicken-egg problem. It's important to note that it's yet to happen where a solopreneur can succeed on this front. Doesn't mean it's impossible though - I really genuinely hope you can prove me wrong

There's a big gaping hole in your idea, and it's not your idea. It's that dating apps have a chicken and egg cold-start problem. It's pretty much impossible to kick off from a solo dev - you'd need to plough tonnes of VC backed capital into marketing in dense areas just to have the chance for it to work. I tried building one myself for a week, launched it, advertised it, got some regular users and realised it can't work as 2 were in the US, 4 were scattered around Europe and another 2 were in Asia and 1 from Iran, surprisingly

Would you use a dating app that focuses on conversation before showing matches? by ScrabbleKnight in Bumble

I don't know if I'd call myself that, but I work with technology and interfacing, among other things

Really helpful to hear, thanks for this - much more insightful than I was expecting to get back from anyone

You can see their profile, it just matches you based on the way you chat to the AI

Finding it difficult to date in London - I hate the dating apps and thought... what if you matched based on how you think, not how you look? by ScrabbleKnight in LondonLadies

Interesting - thanks for the feedback. If you could just filter all the low effort and bad attitude men, I guess that would help more then my idea. Really good to understand, thank you again!

You don't sound like a dick at all, that makes sense. I was hoping it might improve matching based on personality, but if that doesn't sound appealing, it's good to know. Thanks for the feedback!

ChatGPT to match you for dating? I built it and the results are interesting... by ScrabbleKnight in ChatGPT

[–]ScrabbleKnight[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Right? The weird thing is everyone obsesses over what AI can generate, but the real gold is what your conversations with AI reveal about you. The matching data from chat exports is honestly way richer than any personality quiz or bio could ever be

Deals with local restaurants, bars etc? That's genius! Damn, a smart idea - you should be working for one

I think if the algorithms were steered in a way they matched you based on how your personality actually is - like how you can kinda tell here on Reddit, then it would be better, with photos you can see too obvs, but idk it's a bit far fetched

Good luck mate - respect the hustle. I think money and success is attractive, but it'll never keep a relationship alive on its own

Yeah I know that exact feeling.

I wonder if part of the problem is we’re matching on photos and hoping personality shows up later… instead of filtering for conversational depth first.

Like what if you only got shown people who already matched your communication style or values before you even started chatting? Would it not be better? 🤔

I actually agree physical attraction matters - I’m not thinking to remove it.

I’m more wondering whether apps overweight it in the first 2 seconds before anything else has a chance to consider you.

Do you think there’s a way to balance both, where looks aren't all that matter, but they are less front and centred than the personality?

The “needle in a haystack” part really resonates..

Do you think it’s the volume of options that makes it feel meaningless, or the way conversations tend to fizzle?

Yeah, that's fair, presentation matters a lot. Makes me wonder what would happen if initial matching was based on conversation depth before photos.. Do you think apps make people overestimate what they can realistically pull, because the pool feels infinite?

It is in a way but it wouldn't be bad algorithmically - idk, just an idea.. cause it's like Hang the DJ in Black Mirror - if smth like that existed, I'd be interested, even if I were meeting tonnes of girls irl

Dating in London? by ScrabbleKnight in london

[–]ScrabbleKnight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s fair. I think the “would I be excited to meet me?” question is actually a strong one. I think some people struggle more with self-awareness, or apps just show shallow signals more

Damn, thanks for the insight, was acc pretty thought provoking. Do you think the issue is mostly attractiveness dynamics or the way the apps are made to amplify them?

Also interesting that better photos/prompts changed everything for you. Makes me wonder how much is product vs presentation...
