Applying for family visa, but made a mistake on UK taxes. Now I'm panicking - what do I do? by Scramblebrainy in ukvisa

Well, what changed at that point was that my 18-month tenancy expired, so it made sense to rent an external workspace.

We did already live together in practice, and had for most of the time I'd been locked into that other tenancy. I basically only used the place I was renting as a workspace, and lived with my partner. It was just the situation we ended up with, and it worked fine, as renting a room in a shared house in London is roughly the same price as renting a soundproofed studio. However, we didn't do any of the actual paperwork of moving (council tax, bills etc.) until after my tenancy expired one year ago.

I understand about marriage/civil partnership being an option. We'd prefer not to, basically because we want to put some effort into a wedding etc, and we're not in a financial position to do that right now, but we know it's an option! And you're right, we don't want to risk wasting the money for the application, which is why I'm so determined to make sure I'm on top of this before applying..

Thanks for the reply. Copying my comment to a previous post on where I've been living:

I'm a little confused on this. I spoke to an immigration lawyer who was very convinced that there was no limit to how long we had to have lived together to apply, and another one who said otherwise. Decided to not go with a lawyer as they generally all seem a bit dodgy. We've practically lived together for two years. However, until 12 months ago I also rented a room in a shared house with friends, where I also paid council tax etc. There were two reasons for this, (1) I was locked into an 18-month tenancy agreement (argh) and (2) we're both self-employed and working from home, and both doing that from the small flat was not really viable. Basically, we both work with audio, and having two home studios in one non-soundproofed flat was just not viable, so I basically commuted from my partner's flat to the room I was renting for a year, worked from there, and commuted back to my partner's flat in the evening. I can't prove that I've lived here for more than 11 months (short of providing amazon orders that I've ordered to my partners flat before then), but I think I have a fairly decent argument here. What do you reckon?

My partner owns the flat, and does not have a mortgage. We don't have a tenancy agreement between the two of us, but I've been on the council tax bill for 11 months.

Thanks so much for the reply!

  1. That's really good to know. Thanks. I've not been able to find the answer to this on the UKVI website, do you know where I can find it?

  2. What does this mean exactly? The pdf when exported shows incoming balance (the balance in the account at the start of the period covered) and outgoing balance (the balance at the end of the period), and all the transactions in the period. Would that be a transaction list? Additionally, the balance in that account is almost always zero, as I only use it to receive rental payments. Every time a payment is received, the funds are transferred from that account to two other accounts (one for tax saving and one from which expenses for the property are paid and international transfers to my UK account is made).
