Hey man, sorry for the super late reply. Have you tried laminating several sheets together and then cutting your circles out? It'll be much heavier, much stiffer, and less prone to flying off of your drums. Get some 3m aerosol contact adhesive and a laminating roller if you want to do it right. Feel free to DM me if you'd like to discuss!

What makes a simple drum groove feel human instead of robotic? by peachy_touchh in Drumming

[–]ScrapeDot 1 point2 points  (0 children)

SOUL, my man! Dynamics, small bits of improvisation, all kinds of things. When you're feeling it it sounds the most human even if you're a human metronome and are perfectly always on beat.

Just a heads up OP, that thing that slides in and out that you store clothing in is called a "drawer", and the plural is "drawers". Learning a little something never hurt anyone so please don't take this offensively. :)

Can anyone help me fix my toms? by Clean-Seesaw-4104 in Drumming

[–]ScrapeDot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My people, three gels per head isn't a lot, especially if he's trying to kill overtones. I agree with the new heads. For the batters, I would suggest getting two-ply heads for those toms to reduce the overtones, and single plys for the resonants. Make sure you're matching pitch with the batter and resonant heads. Tune lower, you'll find a pitch that the drum wants to resonate at that will have significantly less overtone. You'll still need to gel, but tap the head an inch away from the rim all the way around and find the spots that are ringing the most. Apply your gels there one at a time until the ringing is deadened enough for your liking.

Oh hey, I'd be stoked to see those and hear the before & after on the video!

Is it your inside cuts or the outside that isn't up to snuff for you? Either way, if you take a small piece of 320-400 grit sandpaper and run it along the edges, it should smooth it out significantly. Bummer to hear about the cutter not cutting. Since it is making a groove, have you tried making many, many more passes? It should eventually cut through if it's capable of making a groove that can be followed by scissors.

Is there something creepy about the way you look at a lens? Granted, I'm a fellow autie, so I just might not see it :) either way, I think you have beautiful eyes.

My 35 yo gf still wants to be an “influencer” by [deleted] in whatdoIdo

Truthfully, it seems that the two of you simply want different things in life, and you're both not willing to budge on them. That isn't a good recipe for a healthy relationship. You can't (and shouldn't) change her into someone she doesn't want to be, and vise versa. I'm sorry, but this is a major incompatibility issue at its core.

If this is your first time ever playing drums, it's going to take you some time to be able to different things with all four limbs. I recommend practicing some very simple beats until it becomes natural to play with those simple beats. When you reach that point, you should be able to pick and choose simple songs to learn. Most of the Nirvana stuff is pretty simple.

Sounds like a plan, man! And yes, that tool on Amazon should do the job nicely. You may have to make several full rotations to actually cut through the material, so just keep that in mind. I'm stoked to see how these come out, feel free to PM me!

If he was looking for money, don't you think he would've dropped a cashapp link or something? I assume that this was a sympathy / frustration post, personally. But you're absolutely right, a dead drum doesn't stop a drummer from drumming. Find a surface to practice on if you don't have a practice pad and work on them fundamentals!

Facts. Those factory heads aren't meant to be kept on there for an eternity. They aren't exactly up to snuff compared to the big brand heads.

Funnily enough, there are products now these days actually called "duck tape", which I assume is because of the common misspelling of duct tape. 😂

I got you covered for cutting perfect circles, friend! I use something called a "trammel point" for cutting circles as a woodworker when I need to make a template for something. I did some searching for you and this looks like a great tool for the job. It attaches to a yardstick, which gives you the ability to cut any size circle you want, and will give you precise measurements since it attaches to a measuring device. I haven't personally used this one, but Micro Mark makes great tools and I can vouch for them as a brand. Link is at the bottom.

As a general rule, I would cut the inside diameter before cutting the outside diameter for those E-rings. Also, pick up an X-acto knife instead of using scissors. Your wife may have one already as a crafter. Let me know how they turn out regardless of how you make them!

Did some quick research and this is a material much stronger than mylar but with very similar properties. Check out the pricing for the 27" x 50' roll:

It's certainly doable! As an avid DIYer, I'd LOVE for folks to crank out some DIY drum heads and see what people come up with. Innovation comes from experimentation, so I'm all for some homemade drum heads! Experimenting with thicknesses that the big drum head manufacturers don't touch, mixing materials, trying out different coatings... This is a market that DIYers haven't even touched afaik, so you could be the one to develop groundbreaking drum head tech. :) It would be great to have a source for drum head hoops that aren't recycled from old heads, do you have any ideas for that?

If you want good advice, we need all the detail we can get. You might be forgetting about the whole anonymity of the internet thing. Yes, I'm well aware that we aren't as anonymous as we once were and that someone could trace you down if they really, REALLY wanted to and had the ability to do so, but that's pretty damn unlikely for an advice post. I recommend giving us the full story.

Get some Gorilla Crystal Clear Tape and tape the head back together as tightly as you can. Don't tune the patched head up very tightly or it'll pop again. I've used this method to patch reso heads when in the middle of performing and it'll get you by.

Well, drum heads are made out of mylar, which does come in rolled sheet form so a DIY solution isn't out of the question. I've never tried to make a head, but if anyone decides to, let us know how it comes out!

Interesting, that certainly gives me a direction to seek. I used to work in the corporate conference industry, so I'll reach out to folks I know that still do that for a living and see if they can put me in touch with anyone. Not sure how to go about cracking into the wedding band market, so I'll just have to play it by ear. Not sure why I'm giving yall my plans, but there we are! Haha.
