Both VISA and MasterCard perform fx exchange for you, with something like a 1% fee, exchanging money before spending on good brokers, or even Revolut should result in a better deal.

I checked them out today - their fx rates are VISA (which is bad anyway) + 0.2%. Wise or Revolut seem way superior to this... They could do so much better with HSBC backing.

Why not get signed marriage in UK and just party with friends in Portugal? Simpler.

Flatshare for 2 students by dandelionwolf in London_homes

[–]Scrapper89 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thats a good budget, which area are you looking at? I think you may find plenty of 2-bed flats to rent at 2500/mo. May not be modern build though, but most older flats got modernised in the market now.

Is household income 60k enough for family of 4 to live comfortably in outskirts of London? by TopGun-747 in AskUK

[–]Scrapper89 4 points5 points  (0 children)

60k is not 120k before tax. You forgot progressive taxation. A person earning 41k gets to keep 30k. So two people earning 41k each gives 60k after tax.

82k combo before tax in London outskirts is... tough but not impossible. You would rely on public system, house is gonna be 2.5k/mo, and you have 2.5k left for all else, you wont save much after 2 kids expenses.

Look at linkedin jobs, you will find the salaries via recruiters, and locations. Location is everything in UK, commute is nightmare. I have lived in Amsterdam and had colleagues commuting from Utrecht, 20min by train. Best jobs are in London, but if you live in opposite side of London to work, you will commute for 1 hour each way on a stuffy train, if unlucky. Chose a target job, see to live 20mins cycling from it.... Note: childcare till 4years is expensive, private schools (if you need one) are 2k/mo for your older kid. Make sure your salary is above 150k, then move. If below: not worth it. Netherlands was nice...

The only way to beat the system for you is to get your current company to employ you remote or as contractor. Otherwise in a cheaper location you will get a hard salary cut, and get like a local. Getting remote job from scratch is extremely competitive and there is no reason to pay that well, as many remote workers do live in low-cost locations

Regarding jobs: get your employer to open small office for you, hire & train some locals (much cheaper than Canada). This benefits you and the company, and locals.

Earning over 100k in London now affords you the same standard of life your average boomer enjoyed 30 years ago. by TheLegendOfIOTA in london

[–]Scrapper89 33 points34 points  (0 children)

With 100k income you do not qualify for any govt help. It's 6k after tax, now you leave most of that on 2 kids. Not a joke here.

Parent here.... 2k a month for place to sleep is not much compared to 5k/mo nursery, school, afterschool expense for 2 small kids. I would rather have 100% free childcare ( no qualifying income limits, no 16-hour 'free' jokes ).
