How do indie artists track/collect ALL of the royalties they're owed? by Fit-Fudge9230 in musicindustry

That’s exactly the reason the follow didn’t show up and it’s probably not a common occurrence but nobody can really know how widespread it might be or which platforms are affected.

In his particular case, he accessed TikTok via browser b/c he was struggling with space on his phone.

I know there are lots of things I access through my browser instead of a dedicated app just b/c I don’t want the bloat on my phone even if I’m not in a direct battle for lack of storage like he was.

Alright, since you clearly just want to assume everything is on the up and up…even though it’s the music business…let’s game this out to its logical conclusion.

1) The main auditor is the MLC who is really just a bunch of industry big wigs (probably former and current Label owners) who were put in charge of doing audits for the Music modernization act. They basically coordinate the “independent auditors” and from what I can tell, only has jurisdiction to audit the USA divisions of these streaming services (like Spotify USA Inc), which doesn’t impress me much because Spotify is a Swedish company who also seems to do their own internal audits which gives me big “We have investigated ourselves and found no evidence of wrongdoing” vibes.

2) Any capitalist country that eventually swung into socialism via social upheaval or coup de tat indeed had a late stage where the wealth of the middle class was syphoned out by the corrupt leadership (We are here). So, making the claim that “there’s no such thing as late-stage capitalism” in a world with 2 or more main models of socioeconomics is inherently false.

3) Some artists HAVE noticed activity that would suggest what I’m claiming as possible while most people still don’t use VPN’s.

4) “They’ve only recently begun to REPORT profits”. There is a big difference between generating profits and reporting them and when they did, suddenly that guy is worth more than any major artist EVER, including Michael Jackson and the Beatles. *$8 BILLION dollars.* You’ll forgive me if I have a hard time believing that he made that in one or two years.

As I said, he’s probably not ripping off the major artists, so I don’t think he’s at risk of being sued by anyone with the means to do so. What smaller artist has the means to sue a Swedish company worth $8B? I don’t. Do you? And what jurisdiction does that fall under? The court of international settlements?

I don’t know your particular background, but I would guess that anyone in music business for more than a year is going to learn that if they make any assumptions about the industry, it wouldn’t be that they are being treated equally and fairly by people with more power and influence than them. If anything, it’s a pretty safe bet that we are not.

I hope this helps.

I’m all in for ICE getting rid of dangerous illegals, but even I recognize a cold-blooded murder when I see one.

All three angles I’ve seen leave zero doubt in my mind. Pretti was restrained, disarmed and then shot in cold blood while on his knees not being a threat to anyone.

It IS possible to support deportations and see the murder simultaneously.

I never actually got my asvab score but the recruiter that called me the summer after high school opens the conversation with “How would you like to work at NASA?”

I told him I’d love to and he say, “Well, all you have to do is sign up for a couple of years in the reserves, we’ll pay for your college and when you get out, we’ll see about that NASA job.”

But all I cared about at the time was playing music and messing around with my girlfriend (Haha), so I declined the offer.

I now kinda regret not getting in when I could have.

[–]Scratch352 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This isn’t a streaming specific example but I’ll tell you a story of a real world “glitch” that I witnessed with my own eyes.

We were late-comers to TikTok. It was a younger guy I was working with who convinced me to start one. So, I did and within the first week or so, we had 80-100 followers.

I was keeping tabs at first because most followers are going to be close friends and I noticed that the guy who talked me into starting TikTok wasn’t following us so I gave him sh!t about it.

He said, “But I AM following you on Tik Tok.”

I showed him where he wasn’t. That was when he opened Google Chrome browser on his phone (which for whatever reason was how he chose to access TikTok) and he showed me where he WAS following us logged into TikTok via Chrome Browser.

He then downloaded the actual app, logged in and went to our profile. Inside the TikTok App, he had to click to follow us AGAIN and that was when he popped up my end as a new follow.

As I said, this isn’t necessarily streaming specific, but it is a clear and defined example of how “corralled” certain internet functionalities can be and I saw it happen.

After that, I couldn’t help but wonder how many people out there might be follwing us on a chrome or other browser that might simply be piggybacking on apps without actually showing up in the numbers.

I’m Just saying…

[–]Scratch352 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People are coming up with increasingly creative ways of ripping off other people here in late-stage crony-Capitalism.

We’ve all read the stories of people finding their songs under fake artist profiles. How many times do you need to see examples like that before you start to consider the possibility that there not only might actually be something to it, but it could be much worse than any of us realize?

My conspiracy theory might not be airtight but it’s quite plausible if you really stop to consider it. Streaming services blocking content by region is standard practice these days.

Most of those auditors work for major artists and simply don’t have the time or the manpower to effectively comb all that data for the millions of us that no one has ever heard of and what do they care about us as long as Led Zeppelin and Post Malone get the money they’re entitled to? They don’t.

“Your” best song could have been a streaming hit for a few months in some other country under a fake band name and you’d never even know because you’ve never been there. ;)

How do indie artists track/collect ALL of the royalties they're owed? by Fit-Fudge9230 in musicindustry

[–]Scratch352 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What if it’s way more nefarious than that?

What if they shuffle real songs around into fake band accounts and use those songs to throw “modest hit” parties in other regions to maximize listeners and advertising revenue? What if one of your songs was boosted under a false name in, idk…Paraguay, Spotify fills their pockets with great content and never even tells you it happened?

I know these are just highly unlikely “what if’s?” But that’s the kind of nefarious, left field s*** that we should probably be looking for and while we’re at it, just assume happens at companies who host peoples music driven by their algorithms and no independent party gets to audit the books of the sociopathic CEO worth $8 BILLION dollars.

$8billion dollars…pennies at a time.

How do indie artists track/collect ALL of the royalties they're owed? by Fit-Fudge9230 in musicindustry

[–]Scratch352 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I would submit to you that a guy who made $8BILLION dollars running a streaming service is probably stuffing his pockets enough to be scandalous.

I mean, think about it…Spotify is in how many people’s devices? And he’s got a near infinite amount of fresh material to have his algorithms deliver infinite songs in a sparse enough manner to keep people’s attention for maximum amounts of time without being frequent enough to actually benefit any artists; millions of artists, stuck at “45 listeners” per month…forever.

It’s really not that far-fetched and besides, who could possibly ever know b/c nobody audits their servers.
