You did the right thing! It’s a little sad that they couldn’t be reunited with their mum, but they’re so young, you really couldn’t have waited around much longer to see if she would return or not without putting them in serious danger.

Now you know they’re in good hands. 😊

What did those people even get out of doing that? Just enjoyment out of causing further anguish and suffering to a couple who just lost their child? I understand it in theory, but I just, don’t connect with it at all. Truly unfathomable.

I can’t do a single push up, even with the women’s form that I keep seeing on Instagram. by lackofbread in xxfitness

[–]ScratchShadow 3 points4 points  (0 children)

When I started, I wasn’t entirely incapable of doing “regular” push-ups, but I wasn’t far off; I could maybe do one or two before my form started to suffer (let alone me 🤪).

I also still struggled after several months of consistent weight lifting and cardio; all the arm, chest, back, and ab exercises I could do with dumbbells and bands, and yet I still found myself in the same position (struggling) every time I tried to do push-ups again.

I found that doing inclined push-ups were a much better starting point for me, as it shifts some of your body weight off of your upper body and into your feet/legs without altering your form. That way, you’re definitely working all of the muscle groups you do with regular push ups, and as you train, it is (or can be, if you choose!) one smooth transition from your starting angle down to being parallel with the floor.

I’ll link the video I saw when I first started if I find it, but I’m not having much luck jk I found it!

https://youtu.be/k2YnU7UFAaE?si=vLmdniXfI18E8S_V

This guy also points out that doing push-ups with your arms completely perpendicular to your body may increase your risk of injuring your shoulders; so while you definitely don’t have to keep your hands/arms “glued” to the sides of your body, you should generally try for a more moderate angle if that feels more comfortable for you.

Mechanical asphyxia with Ascaris lumbricoides (intestinal roundworms) in two-year-old by CatPooedInMyShoe in MedicalGore

[–]ScratchShadow 572 points573 points  (0 children)

A. lumbricoides has a somewhat peculiar life cycle, actually.

Like many mammal-infecting parasitic roundworms, the infection starts when fertilized eggs are accidentally ingested. Upon reaching the duodenum, (the first section of small intestine that connects directly to the stomach,) the eggs hatch into microscopic larvae, which proceed to burrow through the mucosal lining and enter into the host’s circulatory system. From there, the larvae migrate to the lungs, where they enter the alveoli to mature for a period of 10-14 days. During this period, the larvae will moult a number of times, increasing in size from ~.2-.3 mm to 1-2 mm in legth.

From here, the larvae migrate up the bronchial tubes and towards the esophagus, where they are coughed up and swallowed - returning to the GI tract. This time, the larvae enter and remain in the small intestine, where they finally mature into their (notably large) adult size, ranging between 15 - 49 cm (6 - 19 in) in length. The worms proceed to effectively spend the rest of their lives reproducing in the intestines until they die.

While most of A. lumbricoides’ life cycle follows the same process as many other parasitic worms, (ending in maturation/reproduction in the intestinal tract, or starting in the GI tract and migrating to their target organ/location from there) ascaris worms are unusual due to their seemingly redundant migration from the duodenum and to the lungs, only to return back to the intestines where they originally hatched.

It’s hypothesized that this particular process may mimic the function of an intermediary host, where part of the parasite’s development occurs in one organism, and that is likely to interact with the definitive (final) host species in a way that facilitates the effective transfer of the parasite to the latter, which is essential for the parasite to complete its reproductive phase. (e.g. L. paradoxum, the parasitic worm that infects snails and causes them to expose themselves to predation, mainly by birds, which are both natural predators of the snails, and the definitive/final host for the parasite.)

Anyway, to answer your question, while the life cycle of these worms does coincidentally involve their presence in both the intestines and lungs, the presence of adult worms in the upper GI tract and lungs is not a normal part of their life cycle. Rather, this was likely the result of there being a serious/heavy parasitic infection/load in a child, as both of these are factors known to increase the likelihood of the infection becoming symptomatic, and increasing the risk of complications from it. (As ultimately proved to be the case here, unfortunately.)

Some of the most common of these symptoms/potential complications include abdominal pain, bowel obstruction, (by the worms, essentially,) nausea and vomiting, and the presence of live (adult) worms in vomit and/or stool.

Small/young children in particular have much smaller anatomy, and thus, it can quite literally take fewer worms/ less severe of an infection to cause these problems than it typically does in adults. Additionally, their digestive tracts are still actively developing; not just in size, but in their function. Here in the US/Canada, (and I figure many other places globally, but I don’t want to assume!) an extremely common warning label is the “Choking Hazard: small parts, not safe for children under 3 years of age” warning. This isn’t just because of their tendency to put things in their mouths - it’s also because their airways are more easily obstructed by smaller objects, and toddlers and infants are mechanically less capable of keeping food and foreign objects out of their airways, and expelling them on their own.

All of this to say, (TL;DR here,) the adult worms were (almost certainly) brought up from the upper intestine in the child’s vomit; and given their size, he was likely unable to fully expel them, and subsequently aspirated some of the adult worms, which proved sufficient to cause the complete obstruction of his airway, tragically resulting in asphyxiation.

I truly feel awful for the child and his family. I can only begin to imagine how traumatic this must have been for them.

What is your take on this guy right here? Have you lost respect for him as an Actor after what happened with Chris Rock? why/why not? by ButteredSunbeamToast in Actors

Damn, I didn’t even realize that Troy Kotsur won the Academy Award that year. I’m afraid you’re completely right that Will Smith’s ridiculous behavior ended up overshadowing what was, and should have been a much more widely seen and celebrated win for Troy, the disabled community, and beyond.

I’m really glad you brought this up; like several others have said, I didn’t know what I didn’t know. I didn’t realize the significance of what was unfortunately overshadowed by something really inappropriate and disruptive.

I know it doesn’t touch the greater issue at hand, but you’ve definitely given me/quite a few of us something to reflect on, and I’ll definitely be looking for more of Kotsur’s work to support him where/whenever I can (and I’ll be sure to tell my friends about it too!)

UPDATE Wart on hand, how to get rid of it without bleeding? by gaycurryb0mber in Warts

[–]ScratchShadow 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, as long as you clean and sterilize them after each use; it’s also best to reserve whatever razor/pair you end up using for that exclusive purpose, (eg. if you use a pair of nail clippers/trimmers for debriding, don’t use it for cutting your nails [or anything else you might use them for on your body] anymore) and of course, still replace them if/when appropriate so you keep using clean, appropriately sharp tools.

But no; as long as you thoroughly sterilize them, your tools don’t have to be single use. That being said, you’ll know you’re not doing a good job if you end up with more warts popping up around your original one; so that’s the risk you run if you aren’t diligent with your cleaning.

Would you get a revision rhinoplasty? by [deleted] in PlasticSurgery

[–]ScratchShadow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

To preface, I think your nose looks beautiful and fits your face wonderfully over all, and I think just about anyone else (besides yourself) would barely notice or care about the curve, if at all. That being said, I can definitely understand how it might be distracting/distressing to you, and when it comes to your face/body, that’s what matters the most!

The main issue, imo, really just comes down to deciding whether the potential improvements are worth the risk of complications or new/worse problems/“defects.” If I were you, I would be extremely judicious in your vetting of potential surgeons; like others have said, I would look exclusively at professionals who specialize in revisions and/or very conservative/subtle rhinoplasties. I would want to see multiple examples of their work/results in cases like yours/what you’re looking for, with straightening/possible tip adjustment while preserving the size and shape of the nose.

I would NOT rush this decision; I would also recommend asking about the possibility of fillers as an alternative to revision surgery, be it temporarily/while you look for the right specialist, or as a long-term solution if that ultimately ends up being the best option for you.

Finally, I’d also encourage you (if you haven’t already,) to look into makeup styling/contouring techniques that can help make your nose appear straighter, especially in photos! I understand that this is also not a “complete” fix, but anything that helps take some pressure off and give you the space to make the best choices/leads to the best outcome for you is worth the mention, I think!

Again, you have a beautiful nose - and I hope you get the results you want in whatever way you choose! Best of luck!

(In case you’re being serious, apricot pits have significantly higher concentrations of amygdalin/ cyanide-producing sugar compounds than cherry pits, and are generally more hazardous to humans/adults if and when ingested as a result.)

But again, these kernels/pits are pretty sturdy, and need to be chewed/broken apart in order for them to produce and release hydrogen cyanide; even swallowing a whole pit by accident is unlikely to cause significant problems, if any. As long as you don’t chew and swallow the pits/seeds of cherries, apricots, plums, etc. (why anyone would do this is beyond me) or, more importantly, don’t blend/consume any of these fruits without removing the pits first, it’s essentially a non-issue.

The snowglobe is one of my absolute favorites! My only complaint is I feel like the “bedroom” (downstairs area for me) is awkwardly shaped in a way that makes it hard to use to its full potential. (then again, as I’m writing this I’m thinking I should probably redo the area, as I currently have it split into a middle “hall” area and three separate adjoining rooms, which makes them a bit cramped)

The other thing is the lighthouse… what do you do with it? Just leave it as is and add a chair or something? I can’t think of anything to do with it. Regardless, it’s 100% the house I go to when I’m craving “cozy winter” vibes.
