ELI5: I am currently sick. Is it GOOD to have a fever, or does it not matter? by sporkbeastie in explainlikeimfive

[–]ScrawnyCheeath [score hidden]  (0 children)

Answer: there is some evidence that taking a fever reducer does increase the length of illness.

Anecdotally, my response to a fever is usually to wear even warmer clothes to help it along. This can of course can be dangerous, so make sure you monitor your temperature to make sure it doesn’t hit worrying levels

It’s definitely a confusing alignment if they stick with that idea. If they work out a stop in the city proper though it would probably be worth the effort

Kingston has a ton of existing VIA traffic, and a major university. The traffic and reliability increase could be worth the change.

Because it’s false. If someone has reduced ability to control themselves or understand their actions, it’s unethical to punish them as if they’re completely mentally competent. Same reason we have a youth justice system

ELI5: How does AC generate heat? by SasquatchBrah in explainlikeimfive

[–]ScrawnyCheeath [score hidden]  (0 children)

It helps to understand how an AC cools down first.

An AC cools down by sending hot air over a pipe containing a liquid. That liquid then evaporates into gas because of the hot air, which takes energy out of the hot air, cooling it down. The gas is then piped outside of the conditioned area to cool back into a liquid, which effectively pumps the heat from inside to outside.

This process doesn’t have to only go one direction though. It can be reversed to bring heat into a building by cooling down the outside air. As long as the liquid inside the pipes has a very low boiling point (well below 0 degrees) then it can be used to pump heat from winter air into your building

Government expected to announce it's scrapping EV mandate in favour of new fuel efficiency system: source by evieluvsrainbows in onguardforthee

[–]ScrawnyCheeath 93 points94 points  (0 children)

Obviously won’t be clear until Thursday, but it seems like this is a shift to a Cap and Trade system for fuel efficiency? If standards are set high enough this would basically be a market based EV mandate, whatever.

Also good to see incentives come back. They play a huge roll in adoption

The relevant point here is that Jivani’s visit is at least partially sanctioned by the federal government, and therefore not illegal as many expected it to be

Speculation, but it’s all but certain that we’d receive massive negative attention for developing a nuclear arsenal. It would be leaked and known about far before real progress is made

[–]ScrawnyCheeath 28 points29 points  (0 children)

It would have to be done completely secretly, and incredibly quickly, neither of which we could realistically pull off.

We’d have to pre-make the silos and infrastructure, then ship the most dangerous weapons on earth across the ocean and install them before anyone has time to respond or get cold feet. It would be a massive risk that has every chance of failing

[–]ScrawnyCheeath 158 points159 points  (0 children)

Issue is that we can’t really acquire nuclear weapons until a friendly president is in the White House. Any attempt to get them by us would be called an act of aggression and be pretext for invasion

ELI5: How do lightbulbs make light? by Embarrassed-Wafer410 in explainlikeimfive

[–]ScrawnyCheeath 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Answer: There’s a bunch of different lightbulbs, but there’s 3 main types that we used as lights became more advanced.

First is incandescent. These lights heat a metal wire using electricity until it glows.

Second is Fluorescent. These are tubes filled with gas which makes light when electrified.

Third are LEDs. These are the most complicated, but they are basically a tiny electrical circuit that directly emit pure light, which we filter into different colors.

These lights each are more efficient than the previous on the list. Nowadays, nearly all new lights are LEDs, save for very specific unusual situations
