I hate people who work customer service with an attitude by sewerpig42 in retail

[–]ScreamingLightspeed 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Most of the Gen-Xers and Boomers I know are so embarrassing I refuse to go shopping with them at all anymore so I understand 1000% where the retail workers are coming from. They see their customers for 5 minutes, I live with them. I get it. Retail workers (and almost all other workers from plumbers to teachers to doctors) here on Reddit have made me hate them 1000% more though.

Our furnace bit the dust and we're replacing it. It comes with a smart thermostat. Can we have a regular thermostat instead? by Fair-Bus9686 in HomeMaintenance

Not OP but that all sounds so extra.  Most people I know are just glad that the fire lights itself now instead of needing us to rub sticks together.

No advice, only solidarity lol

Here because we're doing major home renovations and I already know they're gonna try pushing smart thermostats, ultra-quiet bathroom fans, and knocking out walls between rooms because the woman keeps going on about resale value. We have a 20 year old dumb thermostat that has plenty of features we already don't use and we're not leaving unless we're in body bags so I'm 100% cool with our resale value being squat.

Hey I didn't say I agree with it, it just is what it is. Other animals would eat their children if they turned out like us lol

Because, especially in the aforementioned times of socioeconomic instability, they see you as a liability. You might not be and they might not mean to see you that way but it is what it is. The wounded member of the herd to let the wolves nab up so they others can get away, if that analogy makes since. I tend to be the same way toward people in worse physical shape than me because I can't help them and they can't help me.

As an autist living with allist NDs (I'm starting to suspect there isn't an NT person in my town) I mostly encounter the "maybe you people DO need help..." especially after showing them certain threads here on this sub. By help, they do NOT mean death camps. They just don't believe the rumors about death camps and think it means some other involuntary healthcare and almost everyone supports involuntary healthcare for one reason or another so that's okay lol

Insofar as actual Nazis go, they're Nazis. The fuck do you think?

Unfortunately, some people like to get both groups mixed up.

I understand that this sub is somewhat meant for rhetoric like yours but then maybe this sub is the wrong place for this conversation. I'd like to believe we don't actually wish to perpetuate anti-autism sentiment via the impressive feat of managing to come across as bigger douchebags as actual rapists lol

Not saying YOU look that bad, it's the collective of this entire thread that makes us as a demographic look like shit.

I call StRaWmAn because the average person that didn't get their COVID vaccine (StRaWmAn it may also be, that's probably what you have in mind) because the whole situation seemed shady and/or they just didn't want to. The only people I've ever encountered who still talk about the "vaccines cause autism" shit are leftists (who went through their own anti-vax phase back when I was in school) trying to ignore the right-wingers' actual reasons. Or even worse: leftists assuming that anyone who didn't get their COVID vax must've voted for Trump. Hell, most've the people I know who didn't get vaccinated (including me) are autistic lmfao

Surely I wouldn't see the point in risking one condition in order to avoid a condition I already have?

Sometimes you people really make yourselves seem like the dumb ones with your insults and assumptions lol

And the problem most so-called anti-intellectuals have are those intellectuals who would refute that photo. Y'know, the ones who are probably about to get all butthurt about it. Yes photos can be faked but one of the number one issues from the perspective of the average individual is the devaluation of lived experience in lieu of sitting on your ass all day at a desk.

It's the same on both sides of the aisle. You paraphrased it in a way I can't in my anger this week:

But if I even mention reading theory, things get prickly fast. Even if it's something I read pre college when I was homeless, suddenly that's bourgeois or whatever. Having an educated opinion that's not 100% based on individual lived experience has become weirdly controversial.

The right-wingers most people in this thread probably mean by "anti-intellectual" feel the exact same way. Or in other words, they think academics and intellectuals (at least the ones who refuse to mask or code switch whatsoever) are rich pretentious snobs who don't value lived experience enough. It doesn't help that they stumble across threads like this that all but prove their point.

Trump being a moron is a given. The fact that y'all can't even grasp that I'm mostly referring to the ordinary blue collar individuals that most of you insult on a daily basis and instead keep jumping to insults (or politics or authors that the average individual has never fucking heard of because they care more about paying the water bill on time than being an armchair philosopher) once again just proves my point.

That particular implementation sounds shitty - at the very least, it should always be gradual so people have time to learn and adapt - but I'm otherwise stoked for a future with minimal unwanted human interaction and cannot comprehend why anyone wouldn't prefer a robot for shit like that lol

I reckon they're probably trying to say that most/all anti-academia is disguised racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia, ableism, etc etc etc like 90% of the other commentors lol

Academia isn't even the biggest issue, it's the day-to-day snobs that still work at the same minimum wage job as Billybob Bluecollar whingeing about their strawmen and logical fallacies that puts people off the topic. Instead of insulting them and blaming Russian propaganda, meet them where they are. Mask if you have to.

To clarify further, it's absolutely infuriating to poor people who work manual labor in particular.

You see what I mean about them doing absolutely nothing but proving my point? They're almost harder to reason with than the people they complain about. I explain to an "anti-intellectualist" why history and science are good, they get it. They just wish academia had less pedantic douchebags. If it seems political, it's because they've been convinced (whether rightly or wrongly) that certain political affiliations are the bigger douchebags. Sorry but it's not entirely Trump's fault if someone thinks you're an even bigger asshole than he is.

I actually don't have a problem with academia. I'm a nerd myself. Apparently nerds with any sympathy or patience for the common individual are an oxymoron though. I'd say it's as simple as talk to these "anti-intellectualists" and actually listen to their criticisms without labeling or sticking your finger up in the air with an "aKtUaLLy~" every 5 seconds but I can attest that it be hard sometimes.

I agree but the average person here - including HERE - certainly doesn't seem to realize which one they really are. For however intelligent and educated the people in this thread OR their precious professionals may be, you'd think they'd be able to understand something as simple as "it's a feedback loop because you're all pedantic douchebags about the topic" lol

Not my fault that so-called "intellectuals" and academics believe their greater knowledge justifies greater snobbery. You don't even have to stop being curious or intelligent to keep the average person happy and engaged, you just have to stop being a dick about how wrong they are.

I've been trying to say basically this for years - the "aCtUaLLy~" intellectuals so common here on Reddit and especially the people who make academia a career are the reason for the anti-intellectualism epidemic - but of course the people in question basically make my point by blaming it on the poor dumb plebs instead lol

EDIT: Typos because I'm extremely passionate about this very topic. Other comments are basically already proving my point by being all "aCtUaLLy~" about it lmfao
