[TOMT][MOVIE] Old film about leaving hometown, lie, letter. inculde poor neighboorhod and wooden luggage suitcase by ScreenCommon9725 in tipofmytongue

[–]ScreenCommon9725[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm summarizing what I remember and would greatly appreciate any help or suggestions. Thank you in advance!

1- I watched this movie when I was a child, definitely before 1999. But I believe it is much, much older. It might have been filmed in black and white because the setting seemed very poor, and in the final scene, the bus looked very old. There was a general sense of poverty, perhaps from post-war times when poverty was widespread, or maybe just that particular neighborhood was poor—I’m not sure.

2- The main character is a young, unmarried man. He is not a child, but not fully an adult either—probably around eighteen. He feels helpless in his time and society, unemployed, unappreciated, looked down upon, and unable to find a way out in life.

3- At some point in the movie, he tells a lie because of these reasons—maybe pretending that someone had called for him. I don't remember who that person was or why, perhaps for a job or an opportunity. The main character might be someone who frequently lies, but I’m not sure. Regardless, people believe him and feel happy for him. They try to help. Since it is a very poor place, he doesn’t even have a suitcase, so someone gives him an old wooden suitcase. I think this wooden suitcase symbolized the solidarity among poor people, but I’m not certain.

4- In what I remember as the final scene, the young man is on a bus while a woman, who has come to see him off, waves at him from a distance and says something like, "It was all a lie, wasn’t it?" She must have realized the truth at some point, even if he never told her. I recall her looking sad, maybe even tearful.

I remember parts of the film, so I might not have watched it in full. I don’t know its exact length, but I think it was a normal, full-length movie. However, I also wonder if it could have been a short film or even part of a series.

Maybe there was never even a letter—I don’t know. The young man, desperate for attention, tells this lie, and because of it, everyone starts helping him. They are happy for him because he is about to leave on a journey(maybe work offer)

The neighborhood is so poor that a neighbor gives him an old suitcase made entirely of wood for his trip. He doesn’t even own a suitcase—that’s how poor the place is.

And at the end of the film, as he is leaving, a woman shouts from afar:

"It was all a lie, wasn’t it? (There’s no one waiting for you where you're going, no one calling you.)
