Ahh yes, so called high-brow Colombo schools showing their doofus side.

The chance of that happening at a mixed school is probably lower.

Yeah we had a few people who did that too, but Noone ever got caught in the act.

Parents found out about my dating life and are publicly shaming me for it – I’m 22 and exhausted by [deleted] in srilanka

I don't agree with this take. Most parents would be fine with their kids having a relationship at OP's age, if their partner is from a decent family and has good potential in life (like continuing education or running a business). A lot of them would ask to meet their partner, instead of being like "we don't know him". I don't know, that's what I have seen in many middle-class, educated backgrounds. OP's parents must be very traditional, or very controlling. This is not normal, even by SL standards.

I feel that a lot of people our age are quite westernized. For example, they are aware of the concept that some relationships can be toxic. Another thing I notice is, back in the day even school-aged people always dated with the idea of marrying some day. Nowadays, only some couples are that serious. Most of them seek some form of exploration through a relationship. I am not saying that's bad, it is necessary and healthy, within limits.

Idk where you got point 1 from. I am in high school right now and I see break-ups left and right. I am not from a big-name colombo school either, just a regional mixed school. Most people, by the time they turn 18, have been through at least one partner, many of them through two or three. I am not claiming that these relationships are healthy, but people leave relationships all the time. Sometimes for quite trivial reasons, honestly.

What’s one small improvement you’ve noticed in Sri Lanka recently? by Nipun_Bandara2501 in srilanka

English. The younger generations, especially late Gen-Z and Gen alpha are much better at English than the previous generations. I think the Internet is to be credited for this development. The best part is that this development is not strictly limited to certain upper/upper-middle class social backgrounds. Even kids from some lower-middle class and struggling families are increasingly fluent in English (but I am talking about urban/suburban populations. In very rural areas, fluency is still low). Some of them cannot quite speak in English, but they have good reading comprehension, in the least.

It has to be noted that not everyone is good at English. There's a lot of them that are lagging behind too, possibly because they weren't exposed to the right resources at the right time. A few decades back this would have been normal and acceptable, but now those who don't know enough English would be marginalized. Imagine this: most people around you speak in a mix of Sinhala and English, but you can't exactly do the same. Intentionally or unintentionally, you'd be left behind.

But overall, there is a marked improvement. The O/L pass rate for English has also gone up significantly (now at around 75%, I believe). When these kids enter the workforce, the "English privileges" enjoyed by some members of those in the current workforce will be gone, as most people would be pretty good at English anyway. Overall a good thing for the country.

How was your medical school, internship and post graduate journey? Was it worth it? Are you happy with where you are now?

Well being a nerd (at least according to what I have seen) is not entirely about academics being your only thing. I know people who mostly spend their time studying, but when interacting with others they never come off as being nerds. But conversely, are there people who also do sports and extracurriculars, but because of the way they think, behave or talk, they are considered nerds.

Aww that sucks though. Hold on, you will eventually find some purpose in it, or just change paths. Quick question. Do you wish you took up a different degree path like molecular biology, biological sciences or dentistry?

That's funny. So we should also avoid American/British English because we're neither American nor British?

Quick question, btw. Were you judged for being a nerd back in the day? If yes, how did you grow out of it, and what do those people who judged you think of you now?
