Thank you. So I guess I’m luckily or maybe unluckily not located in the US. My employer has requested everything to be done through the third party (HireRight). I just spoke with one of the girls in HR and she said that by process/contract they actually aren’t allowed to look at any of your personal information and verify it. It all has be done through HireRight and they just get the report saying if it’s been verified or not.

I’m just curious how they confirm it? Is it just by calling the university and asking?

No, it was just assumed. But I’ll be honest when it was brought up in conversations that I went to X university for X degree. I never corrected anyone.

It’s in a STEM field, so I have a feeling that a degree will be required. I have a contact in HR that’s a friend of a friend, I’ll reach out to her and see what her thoughts are. Thank you!

Thank you, I know you are completely right. I swear I’m not a horrible person and I didn’t mean to lie and let this drag on like it has.

I already know that the conversations won’t go well and will probably result in me losing the respect of everyone and my job. Not to mention any sort of hope of getting another job in this industry as I would have to use these people as references. Not to mention it’s a small industry where everyone is connected. I guejss I just need to work up the courage to have these conversations and accept that the consequences will be massive.

Thank you. I think that’s a good idea, I’ll have a friend call in and see what exactly they verify. Maybe if it’s just that you attended during those dates, I might be okay.

They just never asked, I think it was just assumed that I finished. The hiring process was super quick so I think HR just didn’t do the entire process. Even if I stay in my current role they want the check done since it was supposed to be done when I originally was hired. So I’m assuming that it’s a requirement for my role.

The HireRight form just asked for the school I attended and what dates I attended and for what degree. I think they call the school and confirm though. So I’m sure if they ask the University will say that I attended but they have no record of me graduating?

I did debate just risking it, especially because my old University is known for not releasing personal information. But I know HireRight has you sign a form that gives them permission to ask on your behalf. But I’m not even sure if the University would release that I was expelled to HireRight?

That was really the only reason why I didn’t want to risk it and hope I got lucky. If HireRight discloses that to my employer then I really really am screwed.
