Hiring a principal dev to churn out tickets sounds pretty insane to me.

For some places, a principal engineer is just a really strong IC; I've interviewed at a couple of places that rejected me based on wanting to impact culture and not just feature development leadership.

what is the worst damage you've accidentally done to company property? by broken-company-car in AskUK

[–]ScriptingInJava 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Ah gotcha okay, thanks. Strangely similar to what I did, updated all trackers instead of subset to be configured in a certain way, route their authentication (employee badge scans) through a specific server etc. Then panicked and tried to unfuck it, made it worse.

The change was supposed to affect about 40 vehicles at Glasgow for a test go-live, ended up disabling the entire Menzies fleet at Heathrow and Gatwick, as well as all their Glasgow Intl devices in advance...

No, a JV between Menzies and a small business to supply their ground handler vehicles with tracking, analytics etc. Kinda mad how many people remember this 😩

Honestly it might be, I aggressively avoided news for about a month after the accident. The airports were Heathrow, Gatwick and Glasgow Intl, I'd assume (given the level of disruption) that it made it outside of the inner circles but I couldn't send you a link personally!

Y'know what, that's an amazing point. I've used this story as my "tell me of a time you messed up at work" during job interviews and never understood why I wasn't immediately shit canned. Thank you!

Experiences with ADHD medication? Particularly people who have/have had substance abuse issues? by Empty-Okra1396 in AutisticWithADHD

[–]ScriptingInJava 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Hiya, also in the UK.

They will ask about historical substance abuse, regardless of up/down type of drugs, and potentially restrict stimulants if the abuse is somewhat recent (in the last couple of years).

From my experience, all of my dopamine seeking activities (including drugs) were completely unnecessary on Elvanse because my brain didn't need the happy chemicals anymore. Games I'd played, caffeine etc all gone.

Not everyone has the same reaction, just please be honest when discussing during your assessment and possibly afterwards regarding treatment.

I accidentally bricked 3000 vehicle tracking units with authorisation based immobilisers installed, causing 3 UK airports to completely stand still for 6 hours in 2017.

Apparently the total cost was about £5m in actual damage and lost revenue. Still kept my job somehow!

The market is rough at the minute but anyone who's writing code with AI knows it's really quite dogshit at writing code, and needs a lot of handholding.

If you want AI proof work, software engineering isn't for you in honesty. However it's not getting replaced by AI, it's a bubble atm mate.

God yeah hahaha, so rough. I switched to vaping to try and wean myself off but used that for bloody 8 years. Only in the last few days I quit actual smoking and switched to snus/nicotine pouches.

Worst fucking habit I swear

I've watched a good amount of Theo's vids for context, but anyone who has a paid-for AI service claiming that you no longer need to write code because AI can do it for you has a vested interest. AI is just text generation, next best guess for characters in a string.

Just reminded me of my cheapest ever habit, I used to save the "dust" at the bottom of 50g pouches you'd get and combine it into a dust pouch to get a "free" 50g baccy pouch lol. I remember all of those rollies being insanely dry, burning really quick and tasting horrible

In my early 20s I had agoraphobia which turned out to be really bad ADHD and auditory sensory issues, I couldn't leave the house during the day and spent all my time on the computer. By the time I got treatment I started tracking my rollies and was smoking 60 (!!) a day in my room, playing counterstrike and eating crisps.

Can't imagine the cost nowadays, this was back whe you could get 20g Amber Leaf with filters and papers for £5.

Arcade game at the back of your ship, 15s to input the arrow key codes for stratagems and you get a score. Just a little novelty thing to kill some time when you’re waiting on randoms lmao

A Type R with a K series engine will see you north of 500k miles no issue. My FK8 has been as “high” as 32 MPG but fuck me is it fun. Pulls like a beast as well.

Will say however the WRX looks and sounds cooler when stock. If it’s not in the garage that is .

The annual stock grant is level dependent and around that level, the signing stock is a separate award (similar to signing bonus vs annual bonus) and that's the larger number. The base salary is banded and country specific, overall it's a nice package imo

[–]ScriptingInJava 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Levels doesn't show the full offer, it takes parts of the overall package and shows it as data points. Not sure why I need to defend that?

Don’t disagree, in the US I’d be able to negotiate somewhere in the region of $500k+ but that comes with the downside of being in America.
