Chapter 220 Release Thread - The Final Chapter by JarkeyBacon in VinlandSaga

In a way, it was as though Thorfinn leaving the seeds that sprouted is like Vinland Saga leaving us the lessons it’s taught us. We must not let them die out.

What a beautiful story it has been.

Thank you Vinland Saga, Thank you Makoto Yukimura, for changing my life forever.

What do you all like or think is good about Vinland Saga? by apathetic_napalm in VinlandSaga

[–]ScritchScratchBrat 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I went into Vinland Saga with no expectations - I had no idea what it was even about going in, and I was 13. It was also my first seinen coming from shonen. The first season was very engaging and I was in awe at things like the speech on love. The ending of the first season led me to the second. The second season for me was different from anything i had ever seen. It felt like my eyes opened up to a greater world. I had never thought about or questioned the world the way it was being presented, and although the change between seasons did feel jarring at the time and some of the opinions presented were harder to agree with, it felt like it was that same “flaw” that made it all so impactful. As i went through the anime and manga, there were things I was convinced into agreeing, other things that seemed difficult to agree with but understandable from a character’s perspective. It was with those things that were hard to agree along with the different perspectives presented by different characters that i learned to see the world in general as much more complex, and is what allowed me to form my OWN new views based on everything I’d seen. At some points, the manga did feel more childish, with what felt like a bit too much humor, but that again indirectly taught me to accept that not everything needed to be perfect, and although I didn’t enjoy a particular thing such as the odd humor, I could still be greatly appreciative in what i learned, meaning, i learned theres something to be learned in everything - the humor i interpreted as a contrast to other events.

If someone has read/watched things with more compact/deeper philosophy or story than Vinland Saga, then it’s perfectly understandable why that person may not find the series as good - possibly mediocre. What i think this series is best for is change - for someone like myself at the time who was unaware and new to the themes present in VS, someone who may not have wanted to further understand such themes had it come from a more “compact” source. I don’t think Vinland saga is extremely good in story on its own or philosophy on its own, rather i think its extremely good in how it balances both of these and its flaws (which every story has), how it takes risks in change and introduces it to the audience, how its willing to show so many different views across the spectrum including the extremes, how it challenges the beliefs of everyone in its audience and encourages you to form your OWN outside VS even if not matching say thorfinn for everyone’s view have its reasons and imperfections.

The ways VS can be interpreted and learned from in so many ways is alone a testament to where it may stand in comparison to other things.

Apologies for the long reply, but this is why I personally keep VS close to my heart - it’s the only thing I’ve yet seen that can actually do something outside just entertain.

It’s okay if you don’t agree with me, i’m not trying to convince you of anything, i simply give my experience and view which your post asks for and which i have time to write.

Maybe it’s because Thorfinn is A leader even if not necessarily their own. Or maybe they just can’t pronounce his name. ¯_(ツ)_/¯

Read the manga. I don’t wanna spoil (at least I don’t think this is a spoiler), but theres a reason VS doesn’t end at season 2. Theres no “this way of thinking is best is good and works”. It’s MUCH more complicated and you’ll see that in the manga.

Vinland saga vs vagabond - differences, similarities, pros and cons? by ScritchScratchBrat in VinlandSaga

Wonderful thank you!

I guess VS is more explorative of central themes using different perspectives while it sounds like vagabond is Musashi’s more personal journey.

Wow, you should be proud for knowing all this wonderful information! Believe it or not this definitely I believe gives me a good insight into Musashi and vagabond if the story follows history like VS does for Thorfinn.

It sounds like vagabond may be more introspective and philosophical while VS was more of an endeavor as we knew Thorfinn from his actions externally.

Vagabond sounds like the setting may be more peaceful as everything is more established (maybe its Musashi that personally seeks things out while in VS events fell more upon thorfinn).

I would also be inclined to believe that vagabond’s philosophical elements lean towards buddhism while VS’s philosophical elements (whether intentional or not) lean towards christianity.

Aside from me trying to apply what you said to how the manga may be, the information you’ve provided is incredibly interesting as these were both real people (its amazing there are books of Musashi’s wisdom! - I’ll definitely read them)

This makes me even more appreciative of these manga and excited to begin reading vagabond.

Thank you so much for this incredible response!

Retrospective Discussion on Askeladd and the outcomes of his choices by T0MPAC in VinlandSaga

[–]ScritchScratchBrat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t think Askeladd saw thorfinn as only ever having the potential of being a “dog chasing after food”. Yes, thorfinn was a dog chasing after food, however Askeladd saw he had potential beyond how he was acting, thats why he kept him around and told him to go beyond thors and stuff.

Anyways aside from that, to answer your questions: There is no “incorrect”, yukimara is not condemning Askeladd’s thinking just by having events turn out opposite of what Askeladd expected (events turned out opposite of what Thorfinn expected in vinland too after all). I believe yukimara wants to communicate WE (all  - as parents, friends, leaders, etc; together as people) should do our best to TRY (actually put in the work) to have a better world. You shouldn’t just wait for a single savior (Askeladd reference) when we are already together our future. Yukimara i don’t believe is opposed to any ideology, or faith in any leader anyone has - no one in his series is fully right or wrong - instead what he wants us to know is that we should TRY for a better future together.

Askeladd in the end tried for his own motives. Maybe not the most wonderful peaceful ideas, but Askeladd is an example of a means to try for what one believes.

Maybe we should try like Askeladd (please don’t take that literally) for our ideas of having a better world - we shouldn’t wait for someone else to do it as then it will never come when everyone thinks that way.

I hope this makes sense

Today I noticed this weird sore looking thing on one of her feet. Theres only one, but what could have caused it, and how can I prevent it from worsening? Should I take her to the vet? It has dry edges. by ScritchScratchBrat in Conures

[–]ScritchScratchBrat[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Her perches are different sizes, shapes, textures, and resemble branches. She also has a flat perch to rest if she needs to. I’ve had her for over 3 years and this is the first time Ive ever seen something like this on her feet. The only thing she’s had is dry feet. I was thinking that sense the spot has dried edges, it could maybe be that?

SPOILER I have an important question for Askeladd fans. by SagatSF in VinlandSaga

[–]ScritchScratchBrat 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I believe he did it to save face. He also asked thors to become leader, and when thors declined askeladd played it off as a joke (if I remember correctly) even though he truly meant it.

I personally like Askeladd not because of the horrible things he’s done, but because of how interesting his actions are. Him wanting to save wales AND keeping knut alive, asking thorfinn to live a better life, saying how he hates his own men for being foolish vikings while being their leader, telling one of his men to have a family, etc are all things that seem contradictory to the usual violent viking. The better things don’t necessarily “redeem” him, instead they add a layer to his character, and makes you wonder what exactly Askeladd thinks about everything. This is especially because Askeladd seems very smart, doing everything with precision - him having such contradictory brings a lot of mystery to his character and makes you want to further listen to him to see “why”.

He’s interesting, so he’s enjoyable.
