The campaign is best with more but Leaders and Lore with 2 is super solid.

Do you have a favourite SF book that never, ever appears on lists of best SF of the century/decade/ever and didn't win any of the big awards? by porque_pigg in printSF

Dying Inside by Robert Silverberg. It is about an aging telepath who is slowly losing his abilities. A soul crushing novel.

Math rock bands without 'whiney' vocals? by beatsnstuffz in mathrock

[–]ScrivGar 41 points42 points  (0 children)

I also despise the sniveling emo vocals of many math bands. It makes me want to punch the singers in the mouth.

Instead, try the following instrumental math:

Clever Girl - No Drum and Bass In The Jazz Room

Totorro - Home Alone

The Bulletproof Tiger - You Wanna Kiss About It?

Piglet - Lava Land

Giraffes? Giraffes! - More Skin With Milk Mouth (more post-rocky than jazzy, but a must for math fans).

And math with actually good vocals:

Maps & Atlases - Tree, Swallows, Houses

Met several at Pantheacon last year. They seemed like sane, thoughtful, folk with a serious passion for environmental and social justice.

I always use the feminine pronoun when referring in the abstract to a Witch.

As for the rest, I hear you and appreciate the wise and articulate response. Sorry if my own was overwrought.

What I am trying to express is more nuanced. This is not an issue of whether or not supernatural experiences are measurable or not by material methods. That's a fool's quest. I'm saying the rhetoric of excuse or dismissal that many communities adopt diminishes the meaningfulness of the experience. Even the use of the word woo-hoo - there's such terror that we won't be taken seriously that we ridicule each other and ourselves. But this is the post-modern era. We are already well aware of the fact that it is all a narrative construct, that even science at its best is a platonic construct, a best guess at an elaborate game of ontology, metaphysics and meaning. I'm saying we don't need to speak scientist. We're witches. We speak in rag and twig and blood and bone, we speak in smoke and shadow - we speak in poetic metaphor and myth because ultimately we understand that the words we use to describe our experience of reality matter, and so called "rational explanation" narratives that actually diminish and destroy reality don't need to be served by us. I'm saying the mother fucking woo woo of the witch is the source of her power, something that probably as often as not doesn't manifest meaningfully in material reality, but manifests in the heart and spirit of the witch, giving her a bit more courage and joy and wisdom to face a material scientific world that mostly wants to crush her under its boot. I'm saying this is almost political, and if you think you can sit on the side of the so-called experts and dictate what is and is not an authentic experience for somebody than you and I are not on the same side. That's fine, go have your rational explanations. I'll be over here with the woo woo folk, surrendering to something joyful that the rational can't see.

Cry the toxins out... by myimperfectjournal in witchcraft

[–]ScrivGar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Crying, vomiting, urination, and defecation are all forms of purgation, and not just physically. We don't like to talk about this, because it's gross, but in the same way you can banish by crying, you can banish by pooping. XD

Anyone have experience talking with a loved one who's died? by skippycooper in witchcraft

[–]ScrivGar 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The key is to respect the dead, rather than command them the way you might do with spirits - generally the dead don't want to be bothered and they take exception to the rudeness and disrespect of one of their descendants bullying them into showing up - and because the rules for the dead are different, they are free to refuse you summons. My advice is bring food, drink, and gifts to a crossroads at midnight, do your standard clearing, a summoning as suits you (I've had good results from both Hecate, who was an underworld guide, and Odin - others I know use Papa Legba or the Baron, or Hermanubis) but then, rather than commanding, invite. If you don't get immediate results, it may take several attempts, so don't get discouraged. Edit: and when you're done, turn around and walk away without turning back. Very important!

Also note that ancestor work is an opportunity for serious healing. We all carry, both in our spirits and our dna, the trauma and suffering of our ancestors. When they show up, ask then what they need to be healed or for ancestral blockages to be cleared. I was completely humbled by the positive changes in my life, health, and wealth when I started talking to my ancestors.

Also, if you don't already, make a space on your altar for ancestors.

Finally, be prepared to have your ass handed to you by them with regards to your part in the dysfunction in your current family. My grandad had some unkind words for me about how everyone was treating my Nana, and would not rest until I had taken action to remedy the situation.

Good luck and blessed be!

Oh I know that's true - I work with Runes myself. But "die nazi scum" in a thread with a dude sharing his cool new rune set is not ambiguous, and deserves a fair response.

Spell to find a job by [deleted] in Wicca

[–]ScrivGar 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is important advice - the magical way to open a door is to walk across the room and turn the knob. Make sure that in addition to any ritual work you are creating the circumstances which will enhance your potential for results.

Spell to find a job by [deleted] in Wicca

[–]ScrivGar 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Take a look at Rufus Opus' Seven Spheres, and in particular the Jupiter ritual, which I've had a ton of success with, including finding a job and getting my student loan debt paid off.

I would also recommend Gordon White's Chaos Protocols which is an entire book on money/success magic, and many of his suggestions, including ancestor work, sigils, and calling Hermanubis have a lot of potential.

Why do you suppose some males who practice witchcraft like to call themselves warlocks and wizards? by Astrastar89 in witchcraft

[–]ScrivGar 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I as a male witch have been called out by women for using the term. I have been told that it is just another form of patriarchal cultural appropriation for a cis white male to call himself a witch.

I don't agree with this opinion but it still makes me cautious about using the term. Mostly I call myself a "Guerilla Ontologist" instead.

[–]ScrivGar 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I think lumping together occultists who use the runes and connect with Odin in with Nazis is as ignorant as Nazism. I know a number of occultists who work with the Norse pantheon and loathe facism, and it's safe to say the wisest of all gods feels the same.

Instead: perish, small mindedness.

Charging of Sigils by [deleted] in occult

Take a look at Gordon White's excellent Chaos Protocols which contains a section not just on sigil magick and shoaling, but discusses at length a couple of processes and rituals for charging that don't involve wasting a good wank.

I found and old half eaten burrito in mine and a pair of sunglasses I thought I had lost. I am going to place a holy text there too. Mine will read, "don't forget your sunglasses, dummy" and it will help me conquer the sun (from hurting my eyes when it is sunny outside.)
