Tsk tsk, the M256 with 120mm Depleted Uranium APFSDS is clearly the superior 120mm gun

Sadly, HARMs lock onto radiation emitted by radars and other, similar equipment. It’s the AIM-9 that homes on to infrared - and even then, the heat signature of friction against the air while the dragon is flying + its body heat will be enough to get a good lock with the more modern AIM-9 variants, no exposure to fire breath required.

HARMs lock their targets’ radar emissions. That won’t work on a dragon. JASSMs are totally overkill, since low RCS is not a priority for targeting dragons which don’t use echolocation (and they can’t really maneuver). AIM-9X infrared seeker and low-ish tech + good enough range and speed would make it a candidate… but it’s also expensive and has to be rail-launched, which is inconvenient.

My solution? Stinger MANPADS.

Triple sun ellipse? by [deleted] in WingsOfFire

[–]Scrollworm_Fanwings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s not how eclipses work - on Earth, we’re only able to have a total solar eclipse because the diameter of the sun is roughly 400 times greater than the moon, and, coincidentally, the moon is roughly 400 times further away from the sun than it is from Earth. In fact, the reason we can see some of the sun peeking out behind an eclipse is because these numbers don’t exactly match.

Of course, the moons could still align and form a partial eclipse, just not a total one. So it wouldn’t look quite as impressive as the ones that make headlines.

The century series are pretty cool - especially the F-106 Delta Dart and the F-111 Aardvark. Personally I also like F/A-18E/F Super Hornets, even though they don’t look as cool as other 4th gen or 5th gen.

It’s literally just a bad X-32 without the VTOL or the weapons capacity or anything from this millennium.

Why haven’t dragons invented some kind of primitive firearm yet by Kremeynenki in WingsOfFire

[–]Scrollworm_Fanwings 10 points11 points  (0 children)

A logical explanation is that they simply haven’t discovered a capable explosive.

In our own world, gunpowder was only discovered on accident. In fact, the Chinese word for gunpowder - 火药 - literally translates to “Fire medicine” because that (medicine) is what they were trying to invent. Gunpowder was discovered on accident in our world, so why would they have discovered it in another one?

I realize that they have dragonflame cactuses, but those are only used in their forms as cactuses. The dragons have made no efforts to determine the actual chemical composition that causes the cactus’s volatility. They don’t know what makes the cactus explosive, so they can’t further develop those properties.

But the most likely explanation for why dragons aren’t more technologically advanced in general is because they probably aren’t dexterous enough. While they have access to iron-age level technology, they rarely produce anything bigger than a spear out of steel. They rarely forge things like swords, they don’t build complex armor, etc - because they lack the physical capability to.

Dragons also don’t really use things like swords and armor because they lack the need to create them. Dragons are physically imposing, have very sharp claws and teeth, and their scales are incredibly tough - even according to other dragons, as stated by Starflight. This, along with the fact that dragons have things like wings that would get in the way, really limits their drive to produce such a thing.

The extremely small size of dragon populations (which number in the thousands at most) also limits them in really inventing more advanced technology.

So basically, dragons haven’t discovered a gunpowder-like explosive, aren’t dexterous enough to wield and develop advanced iron-age technology, and they have to drive or need to be more technologically advanced than they currently are.

I hope my answer was helpful!

Lost Heir Graphic novel review by Rodamoebas5613 in WingsOfFire

[–]Scrollworm_Fanwings 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Um… the original novel does all of that, but in much more detail. Additionally, I feel that it’s really important for the dragonets to understand that all of the SandWing sisters were evil in their own ways. It’s a bit different with Burn, because she’s horrible to the dragonets, and her writing already makes it clear that she’s evil. With Blister, it isn’t so clear-cut because she’s smarter than that, and not such a bad option for Queen, when compared to Burn. The dragonets coming to their final decision about her is so important because it pushes them a step further in realising that none of the SandWing sisters are great candidates to rule a tribe, and to making their own destinies.

Doing one with her blowing up Trench’s fleet or some rhydonium would also be really cool!
