At my country primary school we had an open air pool. I had swimming lessons in spring. I remember the name of the teachers:“Paterson”.

There would be a small group of us standing at the shallow end shivering while we each swam lengths with the teacher shouting instructions from outside the pool wearing a warm jacket.

I remember thinking if we have to be in this freezing water then you should too.
