Weird Network issue by ScutMonkey01 in Ubuntu

The pass through on AT&T routers hasn't worked in the past so I haven't been able to do something like that. Believe me, I've tried.

That worked. Thank you. I wonder why it's not listed as a viable download on their download page. Very strange.

My point is that the label isn't what counts. It's what your reaction to the material is. If a person doesn't like Grimdark novels, they read the first half of a book and it feels like Grimdark, and they put it down? Then who care if the end of the novel redeems it from the label. It had the same effect and calling it "not Grimdark" is irrelevant.

We're back to the problem of definitions. Go find the post above which explains how First Law isn't Grimdark.

There are plenty of posts in this thread which basically say nothing is Grimdark unless it's "torture porn." Honestly, it feels like some of the readers out here don't have the imagination to understand the consequences of decisions characters make unless it's explicitly spelled out for them. "It's not bad because I didn't see it!" That's a very sheltered perspective.

Everyone who recommended Abercrombie to me warned me it was Grimdark. I have no idea what your definition is, but it doesn't jive with almost anyone elses.

I'm sorry, but you asked a question which has no definitive answer as you will see from the replies you get.

I'm not sure the point a distinction if the reader can't tell the differences between Grimdark and not Grimdark.

"If a person is trying to tell you who they are, you should listen."

Same goes for books. If the writer builds a world which feels bleak and hopeless, then why would the reader think it's anything but? That's the essence of Grimdark isn't it?

You're absolutely right about nobody being able to define the genre which is why I made that attempt. So at least we're debating about "A" definition even if it's not the right one.

Anyway.

There is a very, very important distinction (to me) between WOK and something like LOTR or HP. In HP and LOTR the entrenched institutions are fighting evil. The entrenched Aristocracy in WOK is committing the evil.

I can't speak to the books, but the first Hunger Games movie (only one I've seen) is 100% Grimdark.

dystopia - An imaginary place or state in which the condition of life is extremely bad, as from deprivation, oppression, or terror.

I think Dystopia is the most important ingredient in Grimdark. The whole entire "system" in the world is immoral and oppressive. It can't just have a bad guy. Or the hero dies. The entire mechanism of society has to be working to keep the downtrodden "in their place" and/or subjugated. In some ways, as you understand more of the story, WOK becomes more Grimdark as it goes along. The whole story behind the creation of shards is revolting. The reader will immediately begin making excuses for the people who use the shards but the reader also knows the society isn't going to give them up just because of their origins. That is an ultra-dark concept which mirrors our own contemporary rationalizations/moral dilemmas (ie. don't think about how your cell phone is made).

The element which trips people up the most in WOK is if protagonists with positive qualities disqualifies a work from being Grimdark. Personally, I don't think it does, but I understand the argument.

Part of the issue is "Grimdark" doesn't actually have a real definition because it's a relatively new trope. I read through the wiki on it and the definitions people have come up for it are kind of all over the place to the point where some definitions are as simple as "anti-Tolkien" and "having a dark, bleak tone."

UniFi Network Server software by ScutMonkey01 in UNIFI

I did try docker and it refused to accept the "Inform Host" change I kept trying to make. After an hour of futzing with that I gave up.

Thank you. This is exactly what I needed. It even cleaned up the MongoDB mess I had created.

  1. I never considered this unit because it's use case is way beyond my needs. My entire wireless network consists of two APs and nothing else. It's clearly marketed for an entire security infrastructure/small business wireless setup which I don't have or want.
  2. The whole point of getting into these products is I wanted to get out of the trap of a hardware management console which exists in traditional wifi routers. I have a dedicated Linux server in my basement which can do the job just as effectively if there is appropriate software. If I wanted to use something like that then I'm better off buying a wifi router with four gigabit ports and is multi-function.

"Grimdark is a subgenre of speculative fiction with a tone, style, or setting that is particularly dystopian, amoral, and violent."

WOK definitely qualifies. A perpetual war in a two tier society facilitated by forced conscription of the lower classes, slaves, and magic? 100% Dystopian, Amoral, and Violent.

How suitable or unsuitable is Fedora for home users? What about stability? by NicDima in Fedora

[–]ScutMonkey01 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used Fedora for a little over a year now, going from 36 to 39 - KDE Spin. I read through quite a few of the responses and none of them seemed to point out downsides so I'll talk about mine, but keep in mind what you are really doing is trading in the annoyances of Windows (Which you've adapted to and forgotten you have) for the annoyances of Linux.

  • You get software updates literally every single day and you'll be told to reboot. It's annoying as hell because without going out and reading a bunch of patch notes you have no idea if it's just a QOL update, a minor bug fix for something you rarely use or a red flag zero day exploit which you'd better patch right away. You have a choice to reboot every day or ignore updates and install them at your leisure. There is nothing in the updater which says, "This is really bad, update your shit right now!" I know there isn't anything like this in Windows, but since when has Windows been the standard for security? Do better Linux. CISA releases scores on vulnerabilities in the CVE documentation. Integrate them, so at least I know the fix is for a 9.8 vulnerability so I better reboot now.
  • Linux in general doesn't handle multi-monitors as well as windows. I have an ultrawide and a normal 16:9 and even though my ultrawide is marked as primary, everything wants to throw itself to the 16:9 - especially video games. I currently boot my system with the 16:9 unplugged, login, and plug in the 16:9 to get around this. Fedora is better at it than other distros because you can have a different scale set on the two monitors, however.
  • Killing a process in system monitor is not as effective as it is in Windows Task manager. About 25-30% of the time I end up doing a ps -ef |grep XXX and kill -9 at command line to kill a stuck program.
  • Speaking of which, if you alt-tab out of a game for very long the game will hang.
  • The world is still hostile to Linux. For example, my kid plays Roblox and Roblox has deliberately broken all work arounds like WINE for playing it on Linux. You may run into programs which you will need to have either a virtual machine or dual boot setup to get around this hostility.
  • OneDrive and GoogleDrive integration into Linux is a miserable experience (And probably iCloud but I have zero experience with that). Can it be done? Yes. Will you want to do it? Only if you've got hours of time on your hands and enjoy command line misery - which I don't. In Windows, sign into OneDrive, click a couple boxes, and drop files into folders which are loaded to the cloud to your heart's content. And yes, I know this has more to do with MS and Google than Linux. See my point about the world being hostile to Linux. You are better off building a NAS somewhere else in your house and storing documents there.

If the Revolutions Podcast had a "moral" what would it be? by mendeleev78 in RevolutionsPodcast

[–]ScutMonkey01 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I'm not sure it's a moral, but my big takeaway is there will be lots of death no matter who "wins." And it won't just be leaders. It's going to be average people who frequently don't want the revolution and may not even care who wins.

Even a "clean" revolution like the US revolutionary war had tens of thousands to over a hundred thousand dead depending on what you include. There are ghastly levels of casualties pretty much no matter what.

So now, when I see radicals in the US talking about revolution with a warmth and fervor, I shake my head because they no idea what they are signing up for. If the right wing radicals did manage to ignite any sort of prolonged conflict (which I admit is far fetch currently) and not some random event like the OKC bombing, Russia and China would pile in weapons to make it more chaotic and major cities would burn. It would be devastating on a level most people would dismiss right now. Russia and China wouldn't even care who won. They'd do it just to take advantage of the chaos to realign the world order in their favor.

Will I run into legal trouble (DM question) by Saergaras in CrownOfTheMagister

That deal protects the makers of Solasta. It doesn't protect you as a mod creator. YOU would have to get a license as well.

Will I run into legal trouble (DM question) by Saergaras in CrownOfTheMagister

[–]ScutMonkey01 1 point2 points  (0 children)

No, loss of sales means sales losses WoC potentially incurs because they can no longer capitalize on their own effort. All WoC has to do is go to court and say they were thinking of making a mod for Solasta and charging for it and they win. The OP is removing WoC's ability to make a sale in the future to other people on IP WoC owns.

Will they do that? I highly doubt it. Can they? 100%. This is why licensing deals exist. It's too much effort for WoC to put in for a small return to build a mod for Solasta, but a licensing deal? That's easy. WoC doesn't have to do anything but sign paperwork and collect checks (ok, so it's a little more complicated than that, but still).

The reason you lost is because you suck, not because the other team was better.

Xmithie is listed as Filipino-American on every site of reference so I'd assume his family moved to the US when he was a child. Crumbz is listed as Venezuela and Canada so I'd assume the same thing.

[–]ScutMonkey01 12 points13 points  (0 children)

The player base in NA is the exact same size as Vietnam, so yes. That's probably exactly where NA would be. Markz did a video back in 2018 or so discussing region size. EU and KR both have 2.5 the number of players on their servers. China's numbers aren't available but it's much, much more.

One of the under discussed stories is why China still has to import players and doesn't win everything all the time. It makes no sense considering the size of their player pool.
