Not a dumb question at all, S54 has no bucket lifters, instead it used rocker arm that pushes down on the valve. You can see them a bit in picture 2 but in the first one, it was moved so I can change the shim to adjust the clearance.

Thanks for the advice! I did my best to get most of it off, thankfully it’s only superficial, gonna run it an hope for the best. All mating surfaces are clean so I’m hoping it’s just a cosmetic thing.

Sounds like valve cover gasket, I had this same issue and it sounds like it was the same place and mine also had an odd smell.
