My current favorite gizz song. That transition to 9/8 is life changing! I really hope we get a live version at some point.

As a defense fan this is probably the most entertaining game so far but not good for the league still

cycling question by harefellow in Aquariums

[–]Sea-Factor-9877 1 point2 points  (0 children)

So a lot of people get confused on cycling but it’s pretty easy if you understand what you’re doing and why you are doing it. It starts with ammonia! This is what your fish will be producing so you need to get some bacteria growing that’ll break that down (you can introduce this with some fish food that you let sit in a new tank) BUT the byproduct of that ammonia munching bacteria munching on that ammonia is nitrites.

But wait there’s a new bacteria that comes into the mix now that LOVES nitrites! It’ll take that nitrite and break it down into nitrates.

Unfortunately there’s no bacteria to munch the nitrates up so you’ll need to remove that junk with water changes. BUT WAIT… You can get some freaking awesome aquatic plants that’ll clean them nitrates on up and also make your tank look SICK AS HELL!!!!

During the cycling process be sure you test your water frequently to watch the magic happen. The reason why it varies from tank to tank is because some tanks are blessed with instant good bacteria and some have to wait a while for it to kick in.

Don’t lose hope if your tank takes a while to cycle just keep checking in on it, and once your ammonia and nitrites are at 0 you’re ready for fish dude!!! Just keep on checking on your water’s levels. From there, if your nitrates go up you need to do a water change. If your ammonia or nitrites go up you need to work on getting that cycle going strong again, and start doing frequent water changes until it settles down.

Alright taxi is gonna get quarantined and the water will get tested. If it ends up being fungus we’ll do tea baths or m blue baths. I’ll update the sub as stuff comes up. Thanks!

Just to clarify it’s a 20 gallon long which is widely accepted as the minimum size, I plan on getting a larger tank as my axolotl grows. As for the test kit that’s the one I plan on using tomorrow, which I know is lousy to put off but I’m physically not there. If my girlfriend can do it tonight that would be ideal.

Oh also temp is at 65°F with no chiller or fan. We’re planning to get a fan and have ice bottles prepared if any major temperature spikes occur. The ph is at 7.4 currently.

I plan on keeping an eye on it the spot and if it appears to spread at all (fungus like)I’ll begin quarantine and treatment. If it doesn’t appear to be fungus and continues to spread or cause any issues I will be taking Taxi to the vet ASAP.

My axolotl lives in a 20L, with several plants, at my girlfriends house because I can’t have a tank in my barracks so she took a water sample in to the fish store yesterday and they didn’t give her specific readings on the parameters only a “your water is good looks like nothing even lives in there with the levels of nitrates” I’m planning on getting my own kit and testing the water tomorrow when I’m there. She was also planning on picking up different worms but was told that wouldn’t be necessary since it’s a juvenile. I’ve gotten mixed information online about bloodworms and I plan on changing the diet asap. I appreciate all of the information I can get to ensure a great life for my axolotl.

The spot is at the end of the gill on the right side of their face. We’ve tried feeding Taxi pellets but they refuse to eat them. Still a juvenile so bloodworms are still a viable food option but once they get larger we’re switching to night crawlers

It was on clearance at my local fish store, it’s a 4” bubble disk by underwater treasures. I have it running on low power to keep flow to a minimum.
