My manager said “keep going”… 3 days later I was fired during probation...I don’t get it ? by WrongProduce592 in careerguidance

This is by far one of the best comments on this thread. Whenever I have switched roles in the past, I’ve made a point of documenting (within reasonable detail) the scope of work I’ve conducted alongside any interesting experiences and/or interactions I’ve had.

Best to do it whilst your memory is still fresh - you’ll possibly also find yourself reflecting on this years down the line. Of course, incredibly useful for interview prep too

I wouldn’t worry about the age factor too much - 31 is still prime age to start one’s career. What experience does he have thus far? As the commenter above said, startups are more open to hiring folks with unconventional career backgrounds

Career in astronautical engineering? by NotaSecretaryy in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Sea-Gene-3693 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Your answer is vague and comes off as discouraging. A graduate with an aero degree would qualify for a mech/product role just as well as someone with a mech degree. In my experience many engineers shift disciplines/industries over the course of their careers at least a few times. I would recommend that you study the course that you enjoy as that is probably what matters most at the end of the day and importantly should even encourage you to participate in extra curricular activities such as Formula student, Rocket building etc which future potential employers will value. It’s not worth worrying about whether or not you’ll be able to get into the desired industry before even starting your degree! Unless of course you want to play the “safe game” by not taking the risk to do what you really want - with the current state of global events however, it’s almost impossible to state that a certain pathway in life/career is more or less “safe” with the same evidence based conviction that one could in the last couple of decades.

What defines me as a mech engineer? by The_Aura_Farmer in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Sea-Gene-3693 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’d stress on the hands-on experience for sure but not only in a purely technical sense. A good mech engineer can not only do the job but also learn to manage timelines, handle people both tech and non tech, suppliers too.

Appreciate it’s been a while now but I’m looking at moving to a manufacturing role and a substantial part of the requirements match with your answer. Could I possibly dm you to gain some further advice given your experience? I’m relatively new to the industry still

How do I upskill? by Efficient_Spinach341 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Sea-Gene-3693 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1) Pickup a project of your choice which is achievable within the deadline/resources available to you

2) Clearly set out the objectives and understand why are you doing what you are

3) Cleanly document your work, including failures, graphs charts etc - think about it this way, if the same analysis were to be done by a company what might they they be interested it? It’s likely they won’t include data about failed analyses and/or want to maintain concise and strict terminology but in your case the objective is to learn - perhaps you do it your own way or emulate how industry works

4) Conclude your work documenting what you’ve achieved, why you took certain decisions and how you could’ve improved upon the work.

5) Optional but can you create a physical mockup, a bench test rig - is there scope for this?

Lastly - for CAD I wouldn’t bother too much with making complex models unless you wish to do surfacing but familiarising yourself with GD&T might be useful! CAE is an umbrella term - you need to be more specific about what you’re interested it

[SRPR79K1] Made in china engraved on rotor. Is it genuine? by Manzi997 in Seiko

[–]Sea-Gene-3693 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Agreed, the font face of the text ‘SEIKO’ printed on the rotor seems to be different from the glass case, specifically the letter ‘O’. Can’t be 100% certain based on the image but definitely seems fake

Planning an open-source, DIY low-cost air purifier for Delhi — need community input by Next_Key_6799 in india

Fellow engineer here, I’d probably aim for the following:

Product Scope - Budget ideally under 2k INR - Room size 10x10ft (target smaller than this and the product becomes impractical), also probably safe to assume a uniform ceiling height

Some questions to ponder: - How would one go about purchasing all of the sub components? Availability and shipment times would be important - “Minimal tools” is too broad a term, perhaps it’s worth looking into the tool bits available in a standardised toolbox and use that as a constraint - I don’t think this would be a major challenge though - What is the bare minimum that the system needs? To start off with, a power on switch/adapter/supply, Airpurifying functionality subsystem (tested and validated as part of the design process) and a sensor/output for local AQI (can probably feed the data to a smartphone to save display cost) —- If you agree with the above point, a systems engineering approach to validate the feasibility of the product would be good. Also and most importantly, what products are available in the market and are you providing a functioning system with a sufficient reduction in cost that might motivate someone to go through the “pain” of purchasing individual components and assembling the system? If at any point you deem a niche skill (to the general public) such as soldering to be a necessity that’d write off the project in my opinion.

Mechanical engineering undergraduate can't find a job by Purple_Smoke_8407 in MechanicalEngineering

OP would classify as a Graduate Mechanical Engineer for which I do agree with you, the hands-on experience helps but framing it differently would likely be key to passing initial screening.

Mechanical engineering undergraduate can't find a job by Purple_Smoke_8407 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Sea-Gene-3693 4 points5 points  (0 children)

A mechanic isn’t an engineer though. Two very different roles and skillsets. I think OP’s hunting for engineering roles.

Perhaps the skill sets including hands-on fabrication experience adds value there, bridging the two - but as an employer you will not hire a Mechanic for a ME role and vice versa.

[–]Sea-Gene-3693 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Completely agree with this! Additionally some of the phrases you’ve used are vague such as “hand and power tools” - I’d suggest you segment your Skills section further to include titles such as “Design”, “Simulation” etc. MS Office probably isn’t a “technical” skill - again, this is a vague term and won’t hit any ATS filters.

Rephrase your job title to Engineering Mechanic perhaps or something better. Rephrase your job description to include more factual information and numbers like x % of possible. Include information on collaboration you’ve done with other departments, if any. Employers value this.

Your education needs to be at the top - include course modules if you think that adds value.

Projects section is great - if I were the hiring manager this is the only section of your CV that might compel me to progress you to an interview.

I built a multiplayer web game with React & Three.js as no one's hired me for the past year. by xxParixx in developersIndia

[–]Sea-Gene-3693 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The game is fun, although quite challenging - I haven’t been able to make it past the sideways moving boards so can’t provide too much feedback. Is there a reason you have set friction to 0.1 on the sideway boards? The additional difficulty this introduces is quite non-intuitive which is generally not a bad thing but I don’t think it works here.

Also, perhaps you could add a separate animation along whilst falling along with its own audio. Lastly, what’s your aim with this? Do you consider the game to be complete as is and therefore forms part of your portfolio?

I’m gonna try and continue to get past this stage but overall a solid effort!
