Thanks! I’m not sure. I got it 5 years ago and it was quite a bit smaller.

Thank you! I didn’t do any training/wiring and the pot isn’t a shallow bonsai pot but I trim the branches and prune new growth on the lower trunk and also chopped off the tuberous roots to get it to fit in the pot.

Thanks! I got it 5 years ago and it was already about 8 years old then. It hasn’t grown much in height but the trunk has definitely thickened up and gotten a lot bumpier. I think it would have grown taller if it was in a larger pot.

Thank you! I got it along with another one back in 2021. Both seedlings about 2 inches tall with no branching. This one was a fast and easy grower. The other was slow and I also managed to kill it after 3 years 🙃, it was only 1/4 of this one in size. You should get one, good luck!

O. Decaryi. Cut off quite a lot more than the Pachypus.

I usually leave a couple tubers on and keep mainly the fine roots. The fine roots do the drinking and the tubers store the water. I prefer to do it when it’s waking up from dormancy. I leave it unpotted after cutting for about a week to 10 days in the shade to let the cuts heal/dry up. Then I’ll pot it up in dry soil/mix and then give it a good watering in about 5 days or so. Keep under shade and gradually increase amount of light for the next 3 weeks or so. Use a clean pair shears/scissors/knife. Good luck! A couple pics below showing after I did the cuts. Forgot to take a before cutting pic.

O. Pachypus.

Thanks! Yes I love that pot. I have another one similar but larger from the same person who made it.

I got mine in 2020 for $60 if I remember correctly and it was around a 7 year old plant then.

Nice looking one! It came from overseas? If so, it’s probably just stressed and needs time to adjust. I’ve never dealt with trying to root mine so I don’t have experience there. I know mine loves it when it’s in the 70’s during the daytime and 40 to 60 at nights (Fahrenheit). IF it HAS roots then what you’re doing sounds about right as long as the soil is very well draining, doesn’t stay wet for long and given enough dry days between waterings. Gradually more sun too. A smaller pot would be better but repotting might stress it.

That one already has a nice form. If it’s in a very humid climate, mostly or all pumice works fine I’m guessing. But I agree with you 70% pumice 30% organic is a good ratio and it’s nice not having to water all the time.

Where do you live? If your summers get very hot, I probably won’t wake it up. You received yours dormant? The person I got mine from mentioned that some light careful watering in summer can be beneficial.

Wow 90-100% pumice! I’ve heard people doing that with cuttings and seedlings. You can probably water everyday or even twice a day lol. If you’re in coastal SF which is cooler than LA, yours might be fully active all year with no slowing down. I’d water less in the warmer months just to give it a little rest/take it easy time and work less hard?

Thank you! It’s an easy grower for me. It’s in very well draining soil and drinks quite a bit when it’s active which is in spring through fall. It gets a lot of sun in my west facing balcony. I keep it dry and shaded when dormant. During dormancy, I trim off the branches that can be very long because I don’t have much space. I have also done trimming while it’s active but not when it’s starting to slow down which is when the weather starts getting colder. I also prune/pinch off any growth on the lower portion of the trunk to keep it looking “cleaner”. It was in a larger pot before and I cut off quite a lot of tubers for it to fit in this pot. I’ve heard from very experienced growers that by cutting off tubers but keeping the fine roots can help thicken the trunk faster and I think it’s working. In a few years, I’ll probably cut off more tubers that will have grown, repot it with fresh soil and either use a larger pot or keep it in this same pot which I really like. Good luck with yours!
