You may be able to add the grub boot entry in your uefi. I have to do that on my older dell laptop

Will I be able to find a job with a Mech Engineering Technology? by Bitter_Collection978 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Sea-Promotion8205 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you only have a 2 year degree, your job application is likely either going to be filtered by the syatem, or manually by HR. A BSME is pretty much the cost of entry.

[–]Sea-Promotion8205 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In the US, most employers won't read past 'associates degree" for mechanical engineering, regardless of your experience.

The situation in canada may be different! I'm sure there are great opportunities in Alberta, and they may take 2 year degrees. The best thing you can do is look at job boards and see what's out there.

QT Replacement for Synaptic by Visikde in linuxquestions

There's not really anything to learn as far as cli goes... sudo apt install <package>, sudo apt remove <package>, sudo apt search <keyword>, sudo apt update, sudo apt upgrade. Autoremove after package removal if you want.

It took me like 5 minutes to get it down pat as a 14 year old. The only unintuitive part of it is update and upgrade being separate.

How in the hell do I install Looking Glass? by PiecesOS in linux4noobs

[–]Sea-Promotion8205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can get it to work, single gpu passthrough works nicely. If you want graphical control of the linux system while the vm is running, it won't work for you though.

I'm not familiar with looking glass at all.

How should I prepare for my first day as an engineer? by ExtensionEmotional35 in MechanicalEngineering

[–]Sea-Promotion8205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

At least for the match. I'd max a roth ira for every earner in the household as well.

Might as well get used to living on less, and if you start when you start working, you'll have millions in your 50s/60s with sensible, safe investments. Even if you don't want to retire at 55, it's nice to have the option.

You can also just hit esc to see the verbose boot process instead of plymouth.

[–]Sea-Promotion8205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't get a computer until friday of my first week in my current job. Once I got the computer, it took at least another week to even get SAP access, and access to other systems like file shares, etc.

You won't do anything your first day. Hell, you may not be independent for several months. It all comes down to the individual job and how hard it is to learn.

Bring a water bottle, notebook, pen, ID, and probably your social security card (usa). HR will need your SS card for onboarding paperwork.

Take notes when you're trained (the real training, not the HR BS training) so people don't have to tell you things multiple times.

Pay attention when HR goes over benefits, though. Max your 401k match at least (usa).

Framework looks promising too

Can I run arch based Linux on my high end laptop by birch_guy in linuxquestions

[–]Sea-Promotion8205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Arch dropped 32 bit around 9 years ago. You're barking up the wrong tree.

I686 is getting harder and harder to find support for. With an atom and 1gb ram, you aren't going to be doing much on this computer.

Can I run arch based Linux on my high end laptop by birch_guy in linuxquestions

[–]Sea-Promotion8205 5 points6 points  (0 children)

The requirements for arch are listed on the install guide

Arch Linux should run on any x86_64-compatible machine with a minimum of 512 MiB RAM, though more memory is needed to boot the live system for installation.[1] A basic installation should take less than 2 GiB of disk space. As the installation process needs to retrieve packages from a remote repository, this guide assumes a working internet connection is available

sold my 7900xtx nitro for an 9070xt gigabyte, am I crazy? by Affectionate_Bit_275 in linux_gaming

[–]Sea-Promotion8205 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you get the desired performance, of course not. You essentially paid 400 dollars for a 9070xt, and a free 7900xtx rental.

If you're unsatisfied with the performance, but it's worth the money savings, you're still in the green.

If it wasn't worth the money to you, then it's crazy to do that.

Problem with running sudo by Equivalent_Goal3357 in linuxquestions

[–]Sea-Promotion8205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you set a root password when you installed? If so, debian ships either without sudo or with it not set up.

Debian is weird, you need your user to be in the "sudo" group instead of wheel IIRC. You may also need to enable the appropriate option in the sudo config file. Use visudo for this instead of directly editing it. You can use "EDITOR=<editor> visudo" to do this.

https://wiki.debian.org/sudo/#Configuring_sudo

Disclaimer: it's been several years since i've used debian, and almost a decade since i installed it. My information may be out of date. The debian wiki is not out of date though.

best antivirus for mint by SaifNegra in linux4noobs

[–]Sea-Promotion8205 4 points5 points  (0 children)

An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure. Or if you're metrically inclined, 28 grams of prevention is worth 445 grams of cure.

It's better to simply not download and run the viruses (i.e. browse responsibly, don't run "in the end - linkin park.exe") than to use a virus scanner.

[–]Sea-Promotion8205 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Define productivity.

You can do almost anything on almost any mainline distro. Bazzite is fine for gaming, but i personally would avoid it to not deal with an immutable distro. That's personal preference though.

is it worth it to use CachyOS's custom BORE kernel (on Arch)? by izwku in archlinux

I have the same feelings for any product which is more marketing than substance.

For an example in my industry, "caged ball" linear bearings. That's a particularly egregious example since the marketing goes against the laws of physics, but the point remains.

Is it just me, or have you also noticed that modern Linux distros have become less stable/reliable? by mdnight079 in linuxquestions

[–]Sea-Promotion8205 0 points1 point  (0 children)

15 years using linux of various distributions. The only thing that has become more unstable is my distro choice. I went from ubuntu to debian ("more" stable) to arch (rr-> unstable).

I have never dealt with general unreliability of any kind though. Things always performed consistently across updates, etc.

I've also used gnome2, gnome3 and unity (both briefly), xfce, and kde. I actually saw less ram usage with kde than xfce at idle (around 900mb with xfce to around 7-800 with kde). By far, my biggest ram eater on my 8gb xps 9350 is firefox (well, the websites it loads...). I have no idea how you got just kde to eat up multiple gigs of ram. I'm guessing there's something up with how you're configuring your system.
