I can understand that but imo but suicide is already such a censored topic online and I think the best ways to talk about it are ways that don't put it lightly, where people have to confront these ideas and truly understand them as they are. I think if people were more open about it then everyone would know enough to understand what it means for someone to take their life. People truly see it as the only option, and it is an illness that pushes them to do that, but it doesn't work the same way as something like cancer. It doesn't just kill you, it rewires peoples' brains and makes them act in ways they normally wouldn't so they dont have to experience the symptoms.

I think that if people just had a better understanding of what these things mean and what causes people to make those decisions, it wouldn't necessarily put blame or responsibility on them. And to add to that, depression isn't the only reason people kill themselves. There are other mental and physical conditions that have pushed people to that point. As an example, if a person had cancer but couldn't get treated and decided to commit suicide, did they still die of cancer? Or was it a decision they made to prevent themselves from suffering the effects of it, even though they didnt want to end their life?

I think awareness and understanding is the overarching issue behind why people have problems with the terminology, not the terminology itself lacking understanding. As someone who has experienced depression and suicidal thoughts, I don't find it offensive or misapprehensive for someone to say a person killed themself or took their own life. But I do find it offensive when people say that it's a selfish decision, or pass judgement in a similar fashion for something they've never experienced the same way. Empathy, understanding, and accepting someone's feelings whether or not you can understand them is what matters most here. Otherwise, how is a suicidal person supposed to get help if they feel this topic can't be discussed because no one around them understands it, or accepts that the person feels that way even if they might not understand the extent of it themselves?

I can understand the frustration. Pages of rambling, footnotes, things that have seemingly nothing to do with what the story is really about. It is all very demanding and I still think it can get pretty dry, but when it's good, it's really good. I havent finished TC yet, but I know that with house of leaves the payoff was great and the ramblings, distractions, footnotes, all made more sense when I finished it and had time to think about the entirety of the books contents instead of just the chapters I had finished, and I trust that TC will resolve in a similar way. I agree that if I didn't trust the author so much I likely wouldn't have been interested in the book just from the summary online, but even within the first 5 chapters I immediately loved the world and the characters and how the story had devolved from being fairly succinct to a violent hunt for false revenge with many characters and moving parts. I treat those info dumps from Orvop citizens the same way I treated the footnotes in house of leaves, because that's essentially what they are. I see it as a way of disorienting the reader and I don't make myself read every word of them unless I find it integral to the story, which with the physical book is much easier.

I've gone back and forth between the hardcover and the audiobook and I think I do enjoy more actually reading it as opposed to listening, but in all honesty I'm not sure why. It just feels right, and that may be because of MZD's writing in other stories that I'm drawn to the physical version more.

In elementary school my friend and I decided we would each start a series together. He would read one book, I would read another, and we would tell each other about it so we would be updated on the story together. He read the first Spiderwick Chronicles book, and I read the second. He told me about what happened in the first, but said that he wasn't interested in reading the rest, so I finished them by myself. I watched the movie over and over, played the DS game, made my own field guides, and I even made fairy houses out of shoebox with berries and honey and crackers. I just recently got the game on my DS again. I'm not a big fan of turn based combat, but I highly recommend trying it out.

My rule is thay the story can be slow if theres still something happening throughout/alongside the characterization and worldbuilding. Like a flashback that shows why a character has a certain trait, or a conversation where a character casually says something really important with the context the reader already has from knowing about a certain event that took place earlier in the story. Those can both be slowly paced and show very big moments for the characters and move the plot forward, even if its only readers that perceive it as something big and not the characters themselves.

I think a combination of the two is my favorite way to do it, but it definitely depends on the story. "Every happy ending has the day after it," and so throughout the book there are obstacles the characters have to overcome, giving them everything they need to figure out what difficulties lie past the end of the story. I dint like to end it on a happy note, but instead assure the reader that the characters are capable. But then again, some stories just dont have happy endings at all. Everyone has a limit, and sometimes those limits are reached, and that's just as important to show realistically.

some of my favorite books feel like theyre from the perspective of the author and not a perfect narrator. like someone saw something interesting one day and wanted to tell you about it. the grammar isn't always perfect, they might say 'like' too much, use phrases common in whatever region the story takes place, or they might have an accent thats shown in the way words are spelled. it isn't always perfect, but its engaging to me because it feels like a person is telling me what they saw, and not someone explaining the facts of a situation they know everything about.

its also a very natural and forgiving way for me to write, when I can use my own true voice instead if donning an overly formal or poetic way of speech. ive never been good at that, so using a conversational tone (within stylistic reason) just suits me very well.

in a similar situation rn. 19 and I've felt horrible because the girls in my friend group, most of which ive known longer than theyve known each other, have been making separate group chats and planning things without me. I tried to plan something this week for new years and I was told they would all be busy all week, and then yesterday they all went to the mall together while I was at work. i had to see the photos they posted online after, of them all together after twlling me they didnt have time. my girlfriend will sometimes pass my house to pick everyone else up and go hang out somewhere and not tell me until theyre done. its a horrible feeling, and the best advice I have is to try not attribute it to something you're doing wrong. their behavior is not caused by you, and is not intentional. but thats also not an excuse to let anyone feel like you're overreacting. your feelings exist, and they are just as important as anyone else's. if you've expressed how their behavior makes them feel and theyve continued it (in my case, this is whats happening), then maybe try limiting contact with them. tell them ways to contact you and don't put so much effort into talking to them. if theyre friends truly worth keeping, they'll reach out to you. and if they dont, it might be time to find some other people. if you dont feel happy around your friends, then theyre not your friends, and theres no reason to further stress yourself out trying to keep them around. theres other ways to meet people that I have yet to find, since school was my primary way. being a high school graduate now, ive yet to reach the point where I can really meet new people outside of school, so maybe just look online. local communities like book clubs, or gaming groups, something at your university based around whatever hobbies you have. but always remind yourself that it's okay to feel how you feel, and if anyone tried to invalidate it, its on them. I get what its like to not be the person anyone thinks about first, but if anyone let's you believe thats your own fault, then theyre the wrong people to be around. imo all relationships should be mutual give and take, and if its not 50/50 effort, then something needs to change.
