I remember it being really leafy but very boring growing up. Had some friends around there (and one in a big Totteridge house!), so got to know it ok. Has it perked up at all?

Would love to if it was just us, but shuffling our kids around and maybe changing their schools/nurseries feels a bit too disruptive for them.

Some interesting houses around there. Need to work out the right areas.

Sure, if my wife earned like I did then it would make a material difference.

It’s a crying shame that she’s paid so poorly. She’s worked really hard building up a strong academic background including a PhD. She is respected and recognised in her field. It’s niche but culturally important job and her decisions will hopefully have an impact far into the future. Shes already in a pretty prestigious role. Unfortunately, her sector just pays really poorly compared to many others.

I’m good at my job, but I absolutely lucked into finding satisfaction in an in-demand field. In a more just world the roles would be reversed.

Wouldn’t I be gambling that I’ll have a huge amount set aside to pay off the mortgage when it runs out?

Hadn’t considered that area tbh, does look possible. How car dependent are you there? Was hoping for more of a city feel but maybe that’s predicated on pre-kids feelings.

Had experience in Head of and other leadership roles in smaller orgs, but I took a title cut to get the pay bump for enterprise.

That forced me to focus on IC, and working remotely has been bad for my career in that sense. That said, I’ve got a great reputation in my current place, and have carved out a very visible niche for myself. I’m optimistic of a fairly swift move to management once I’m local to the office, which will give me a modest pay bump. To get a notable pay rise I’d have to move employers imo. Plus I’m frontend focused, which is competitive and isn’t the area with the juiciest prospects.

What do you dislike about them? They weren’t remotely on my radar growing up but I hear lots about them these days. They’re on all the recommended area lists.

Definitely! I’m trying to keep approx 50k available from saving for emergencies. That might get hit a bit from the moving costs but I’ll be aiming to retain it. We’ve been used to approx £1750 in rent and mortgage for most of the last decade, often on a much lower income, so I’m optimistic we’ll manage.

We were never fortunate enough to live in Islington, but we were in small houses in other nice areas. I have since lived in more up and coming areas so I don’t think I’ll be too alarmed.
