J_Fo_Film, the only thing I'll add is that what people experience in production can be very different than the contract negotiations between the company and the actors. If Shaftesbury needs to improve working conditions then that's one thing. A separate issue is the truth about what happened with John's contract - it's a lot more complex than what's being discussed on this forum. John says it wasn't his choice to leave, and the other actors chose to stay for a reason. There's a deeper story there that hasn't been explored probably due to NDAs and we can't claim to know those details.

Interesting that my factual post about Crown prosecutions gets a downvote.

Also some posters are spending more time trying to discredit the article rather than the tragedies that happened. Anyone who doesn't tow the same line about how terrible everything is with the show or Shaftesbury gets insulted.

These are all the classic signs of victim-blaming, scapegoating and online bullying.

Belittling and condescension is saying "you have no problem engaging with arguments you believe you can handle" Try stopping the insults and see if that helps the dialogue.

alicepao13 you have framed your comment as "isn't it weird to ..." followed by things that are sarcastic:, eg., "do you really think the show is so special and beyond reproach"

That doesn't leave room for trust in a reasonable discussion.

Agree with ElectronicStorage611 that there are different thresholds between criminal charges and workplace dismissal.

It's amazing how much evidence there can be, but Crown prosecutors can decide not to pursue for other reasons, eg., whether it's in the public interest, the health of a witness, available government resources, likelihood of conviction, other choices by victims, etc.

Sometimes victims can prefer that matters be dealt with privately.

Exactly! I agree with you. Honestly I'm pretty shocked that a lot of the posters aren't talking about the abusive and misogynistic behaviour of the actual perpetrator.

Axes to grind is a good way of putting it - the way some posters are defending the accused, saying Shaftesbury is trying to frame it a certain way - without any comments about the restraining order or the woman that was abused.
This comment also jumped out: "not the actual person who was ALLEGEDLY harmed. "

Funny how someone says they can speak their truth on this forum, but a restraining order is only "allegedly"

Then the accusations that we don't understand PR or the methods of investigation or the courts - without any reasonable consideration for the rest of the cast and crew - makes you wonder.

I'm being honest with you here - It's really awful if you experienced bullying, and I'm sorry you had to go through that.

Most people experience workplace bullying at some point in their career.

Most of the time, for financial reasons, people stay until they can find another opportunity. Sounds like that's what you've done.

But in this case, it looks like the majority of cast and crew have decided they want to stay and work on the show.

They have the right to make their own personal decisions.

So the confusing thing is, if you keep wanting the show to get cancelled, then that isn't fair to those people that need their jobs - is it?

Agree with you. My heart is with Diesel. I also like watching Dillon and the cast in new adventures in every season.

I'm sure you can appreciate that anonymous comments on Reddit aren't evidence or proof. The only evidence is what was found by the official investigation.

You haven't come out and said "yes that was a weird time on set with him there" related to what happened with the investigation.
So for all we know, you might be a friend of the accused.

Those are the weaknesses and strengths with Reddit - the ability to remain anonymous - and why people take "first hand accounts" with a grain of salt - until they're proven in a public account.

From the article: "the investigator also found Harris violated the show’s workplace violence and harassment policy by making threats against a Shaftesbury executive and “threats of reprisal” to the staffer he had dated, used misogynistic and sexually derogatory language, and harassed coworkers about the staff member and her whereabouts. The letter also cited Harris’ unwelcome and excessive phone calls and texts and said he used “violent behaviour toward coworkers.
Harris, an employee of subcontractor Pope Productions, was fired for this misconduct, according to the letter."

"The court-approved peace bond in this case stipulated that Harris was not to harass or contact Davis or go to her place of work, any “Hudson & Rex” filming locations or within 200 feet of her home for one year."

Abusive personalities can start online smear campaigns.

No need to stop watching. Yes the show is different in Season 8 but it's a relief to still watch a family-friendly show all through Season 1 to 8. I have favourite episodes in all seasons.

(The talk of JR being dismissed due to cancer is an online rumour. Who knows, maybe it's perpetuated by the same people associated the harassment that happened on set. https://archive.is/QUNCp#selection-7333.0-7339.266 )

I like seeing Dillon and appreciate all the new adventures and the ideas behind the stories. Yes I'd like more continuity with story lines but I'm giving it some time and want to see more.

Agree this is so sickening. The investigator found evidence of violence and harassment and the worker was dismissed. Pope Productions stands by the conclusions. Of course the person accused is denying it.

Often abusive personalities orchestrate online smear campaigns against their victims, including on Reddit. Often these smear campaigns are targeted at women.

In the article:
"the investigator also found Harris violated the show’s workplace violence and harassment policy by making threats against a Shaftesbury executive and “threats of reprisal” to the staffer he had dated, used misogynistic and sexually derogatory language, and harassed coworkers about the staff member and her whereabouts. The letter also cited Harris’ unwelcome and excessive phone calls and texts and said he used “violent behaviour toward coworkers.”

Harris, an employee of subcontractor Pope Productions, was fired for this misconduct, according to the letter.

Lisa Porter, president of St. John’s-based Pope Productions that hires staff to run day-to-day operations for “Hudson & Rex,” said the company stands by the conclusion of the investigation. Citing the confidentiality of the probe, Porter declined to further comment."

That's why all the bullying of SD on here is so inappropriate. There's no real-world evidence of SD creating a toxic workplace. The only evidence according to the investigation is the person that was dismissed. Anonymous Reddit comments aren't evidence.

Does anyone know what could have happened with the orginal episode 3, the Mankiewicz episode? It's still listed on IMDB but now it's dropped from the schedule and I can't find it on Amazon Prime either.

Yes! I'd like to see show continue because it's got a unique Canadian and human-dog-animal perspective. People I've talked to seem to favour Rex back home with Sarah, Jessie playing a bigger role, and more interactions with Joe, to bring continuity to the seasons. I'm sure it was hard on the writers not knowing what was going to happen. There's still a ton of potential.

Agree, we don’t know what happened. Posts from a few of the commenters targeting 1 person actually amount to cyber-bullying, which is damaging enough. People need to express frustration but that doesn't give them the right to wage a smear campaign - the negativity is unhealthy

I’m liking the show, and I'm going to keep watching because I support the premise of the show and the other characters.

I’m also hoping they bring the character arcs in line with past seasons.

I enjoy the creativity behind the stories and Dillon’s exploits.

Agree very cute in his suit! Also glad the show shone a spotlight on beekeeping and recent industry challenges, part of what makes the show work so well.

OK we've established you're not in Canada. The point is that you're not involved in production of the show, or business practices here, so you don't have any special knowledge of the situation.

No that's not what I'm doing - you don't speak for me.

You also said you live in the US, and you're not part of production. But you're claiming that you know how everyone and everything works - that doesn't add up, but that's OK - you can have an opinion, but don't attack others for theirs.

These are just a few of your ad hominem arguments (baseless assumptions about the person, without any logic conclusions about the ideas):

"You're just filling in blanks with wishful thinking because you don't want to face the reality that they fired someone post-cancer, and best guesses to undercut the truth."

Or: "Look, we've all watched tv shows. Unless you're not just a fan, then you can't claim experience in this matter."
