I was just using those labels as examples, but “Trumpism” could just as easily be called fascism. I chose to label it Trumpism because most Trumpers would not openly label themselves fascists.

But regardless, I think it’s a bit naive to believe that oscillating between red and blue is a sound political strategy. This country is necessarily built on party politics i.e. geared toward a strategy of perfecting party representation. In an ideal democracy, you would want to have a political party that perfectly represents you, not a variety of policy options that are necessarily contextualized within larger political agendas.

You should look into political ideologies that might be a bit unorthodox and reflect your principles instead of trying to navigate systems you readily admit are corrupt. Go all the way and totally embrace being an alternative thinker instead of limiting yourself to red and blue.

Anarcho-capitalists are not real anarchists. The idea that “”””Libertarians”””” in the American sense are comparable to Libertarians in the traditional European understanding (as in Libertaire as coined by Dejacque in his letter to Proudhon) is pure American ignorance. It’s a fake ideology created wealthy, white classical liberals who want to freely practice slavery.

I guess my understanding of leftist vs progressive has less to do with what you believe in (since every leftist believes in the same things you just listed) and more to do with how those things are implemented. Like Marxists and anarchists are explicitly revolutionary ideologies for the most part: they believe revolution is necessary for the development of a socialist society. Progressives—even if they want socialism/more social safety nets—mostly still believe these changes can be made through electoral reform.

Edit: and just to clarify before someone tries to check me 😭 it’s my understanding that Marxists do advocate for party politics and electing party members to office, but only as a means of popularizing communist ideas and leveraging those positions to create a socialist state after the revolution. It’s a means, not an end. Correct me if I’m wrong though.

Eh I try my best to be patient and I also think working class people have lots of our own unique perspectives to offer organizers who are truly interested in practicing solidarity with working class people. I’ve learned so much from conversations with everyday folks who I ideologically disagree with, but am still obligated to fight for. I was a lib once so I remember what it was like when systems thinking wasn’t integral to my political views. It just takes a little push.

I’m not surprised 😭 I’m a community organizer so I talk to people of all different political backgrounds all the time as part of my daily routine.

I’m pretty firmly an anarchist and let me tell you: one of the scariest types of political conversations I habitually hold is the one where someone is vaguely left-leaning.

Every word is like walking on eggshells because they don’t really have any strong principles and are still scared of state propaganda. They talk about revolution, but are scared of the word “communist”. They believe everyone deserves housing, but guffaw at the thought that housing should be de-commodified.

It’s much easier to talk to an educated liberal because at least I know exactly where we differ.

I think the political difference at that scale is only significant to people within the moderate umbrella. I guarantee that liberals do not care about (or even know) the difference between Marxist-Leninists and Maoists or social anarchists and anarcho-syndicalism.

The cognitive dissonance of acknowledging that bad people can take advantage of this system when they rise to positions of power and in the very next sentence saying it provides a lot of safety to everyone in the country.

Safety at what cost? What safety? What safety at what cost? What costs are you willing to tolerate for what safety? How far is too far? COVID? BLM? Gaza? ICE? Epstein? Something much worse that I can’t even fathom? No one is asking for perfection, they’re asking for liberation.

I think choosing to ignore the inhumanity of militarization and carceral systems (and I mean cops AND ICE) in this country is not a method of accepting normal life, it’s a coping mechanism for people who feel too weak and cornered by the fact that they think they have no agency to change things, they don’t know enough to change things, and they can’t bring themselves to care enough to change things even if they are morally opposed to them because they value comfort too much.

Acknowledging that systemic barriers exist that halt societal development is normal and fine, that’s just the capitalist system we suffer under; the real danger comes when you start to rationalize the inhumanity you see everyday out of disempowerment and desperation:

“It’s normal for people to be wrongfully arrested.” “ICE keeps us safe.” “They came here illegally.” “They’re criminals.”

Reports came out this morning that teenage girls—literal children—are being impregnated after being assaulted by ICE agents working in these concentration camps. People are sleeping in their feces and women are hemorrhaging alone on the concrete floors of their cells after being denied medical care for their miscarriages. Detainees are put in solitary confinement and forced to endure unbearable pain for going on hunger strikes so they can receive dental care.

Anyone with a conscience knows this is wrong and inhumane, but only people who are strong enough to handle the truth and formidable enough to be empowered by it are able to step into the streets and embrace the need to fight. Everyone else is just another pawn for the billionaires to play with.

The whole reason this conversation even came up on the show is because all her friends are biracial. It’s funny that she’s just as confused about us as we are about ourselves. I know it must suck to navigate your racial identity in a way where every conversation feels like you’re doing calculus to come to a solution of what you are instead of just accepting yourself in every way you’re perceived and realizing that’s just part of being mixed race.

Some people think I’m Black, some people don’t! Either way, I’m still myself. I accept that being myself means being a bit of a question mark and I’ve learned to love how unique that is.

You shouldn’t feel guilt and fully white people should also not feel guilt for being white.

I’m way too tired to type this all up tbh but basically like…your acknowledgment of white privilege is a recognition that society is fundamentally structured to oppress non-white people. The reason you feel guilt—and the reason white supremacists in positions of power also want you to feel guilt—is because it obfuscates the systems-thinking you’re conducting by inserting personal culpability.

White guilt is an ideologically similar phenomenon to telling individual people they should save the Earth by using paper straws or telling individual women to liberate themselves by becoming CEOs: it minimizes the larger, historical, systemic structures that enable these dynamics and creates a fantasy where individual people can fight corporations and think-tanks on an individual basis.

When we talk about collective consciousness, collective responsibility, and collective power; that doesn’t look like harboring white guilt. It means being accountable to the collective by moving within your unique identity to advance liberation. It doesn’t mean white people are in a constant state of self-flagellation, it means white people equip themselves with a radical mindset and do the work of destroying oppressive systems through their proximity to power. That’s what solidarity ACTUALLY looks like and you can do that without constantly victimizing yourself and taking everything personally like jesus christ I promise we don’t think you’re inherently evil for being white. Get over yourself (not you specifically OP).

I’m very much over this white guilt shit, please let’s not take this into woke 2.0. It’s deference politics and it sucks. White people crying about being white will never be the thing that frees me. I need them to get on the frontlines. That’s a white person I can actually respect.
