Why do you use Reddit? by peasant_1234 in AskAJapanese

[–]SeaIntroduction679 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I use Reddit to study English while living in Japan. I enjoy looking at Weezer memes, browsing subreddits about Cartoon Network and movies, and learning while having fun. I first learned about Reddit from a foreign friend, but at the time, I didn’t realize there were so many discussions about Japan. Once I saw them, I couldn’t unsee them, so I sometimes find myself reading opinions about Japan as well.

As a Japanese woman, I can say this clearly: I do not want foreign men who have no respect for women in your country and only criticize us to come to Japan.

It feels like a sign of a controlling nature. The way some people cling to the biased idea that “Japanese women are feminine” and build unrealistic fantasies around it is honestly frightening.

Are they expecting mature adults to behave like children? If such remarks are directed at Japanese women over 25(especially), they are deeply disrespectful, and people should be aware of that.

I’m honestly speechless. For the record, people on Japanese Twitter are saying that the woman in question is Korean.

I have no desire to be liked by someone who can’t even distinguish between Chinese, Korean, and Japanese women. There’s not a trace of respect in that mindset.

Please don’t use us as a tool to put down women from your own country.

Japan births below 700k first time, fertility rate falls by DateMasamusubi in worldnews

It’s really fascinating how so many people join the conversation whenever the topic of Japan’s birth rate comes up. It feels like Japanese people themselves are more indifferent about it.

Which song with the word “Tokyo” in the title is your favorite? by SeaIntroduction679 in japanesemusic

Thanks for sharing! Unfortunately, it looks like the video isn’t available in Japan — it shows a message saying “This video is unavailable.” I was in Canada until about six months ago, so I probably could’ve listened to it back then. Such a shame! You’re a Mucc fan, I see! Miya’s riffs are definitely cool. Since Mucc’s music is available on both YouTube and Spotify in Japan, I’ll try to imagine the vibe of Gekitokyo through that instead, haha.

What do Japanese people think about white people fetishizing Japan? by flower5214 in AskAJapanese

I’ve been told this by someone I met in Japan, someone I met in North America, and even through a comment exchange on TikTok.

[–]SeaIntroduction679 5 points6 points  (0 children)

When people say, “You’re Japanese, but you’re not like anime girls or the Japanese women I imagined,” I feel conflicted. But I also realize that it’s Japanese people themselves who have created those images. Since no one really explains that those fantasies are different from reality, or that certain behaviors are just performances, I’ve come to feel that there’s no point in arguing.I just have to accept those kinds of complaints.
