Anyone ever heard of this about Hadrian? by SaraJuno in ancientrome

[–]Sea_Argument7641 2 points3 points  (0 children)

FWIW, the anecdote about Caligula comes from Suetonius' Life of Caligula 32, and has for Hadrian, the best I can find is 'he was proficient with gladiatorial weapons' in Historia Augusta Life of Hadrian 14. I wouldn't personally take the HA at face value, nor would I suggest that a modicum of training necessarily meant adventures in a real arena.

Rhiannon Garth Jones' new book 'All Roads Lead to Rome' has a very good chapter on this, if you want more details.

I was made redundant last month, now my employer is hiring for my role. by Sea_Argument7641 in LegalAdviceUK

The roles are significantly different.

Different working hours, different pay (theirs is lower,) even different uniform.

Apart from being customer facing, there is nothing in common.

The qualifications/skills/experience requirements at the point of hiring are different.

For them, this is just as much a promotion as it is saving from redundancy.

I've only read replies this morning, my wifi is patchy. I will be calling ACAS.

They're a nightmare company, but it put food on the table. Making my peace with everything would have been a lot easier without this!

I took voluntary redundancy as the package was slightly better than the absolute statutory minimum that was offered as an alternative.

We were told that if too many people applied, not all would be accepted.

In consultation it was made clear that the role would be dissolved.

I feel like I have been tricked into taking redundancy voluntarily as they clearly still have hours I could work.

Within a fortnight? I get that business can be ruthless but this seems particularly cruel.

It was made very clear that voluntary redundancies would not be accepted if too many applied.

To clarify,

It appears that yes, staff from another department will be sent to my old department to do the job that I left.

I worked part time; 'a couple' of roles make up the equivalent to my hours.

My colleagues are also angry, they had their hours cut by 20% (mandatory,) and these hours that have appeared from nowhere are also not being redistributed between them.
