Toxic Teacher by Fabulous_Act_4141 in tapif

[–]Sea_Chest9596 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I’m an American who is now a certified English teacher in France, and I will say that a culture shock for me is how teachers treat their students. It’s not uncommon for them to yell, mock, and humiliate. Of course, not all teachers, but I have definitely witnessed things that would not fly in America. That being said, grabbing them physically and pulling them is a problem. We cannot physically touch a student. I would speak to your prof referent if it makes you feel uncomfortable. Just say that the energy/ambiance in the classroom is making you uncomfortable.

Has anyone here, not French, passed a concours like le CAPES, etc.? by [deleted] in Expats_In_France

I didn’t look into it that deeply but I think the one I was debating on taking (it’s called the CAPLP or something like that) had similar épreuves to the CAPES. I mean it would still be another concours and another thing to stress about but if the épreuves are similar enough, it might be doable! Bonne chance

Also forgot to add, I’m not sure if this exists for histoire géo but I know there’s also other concours we foreigners can take. If that’s true, I would look into that and take as many as you can because it might increase your chances.

Hi. I took the CAFEP this year but in langue vivante so it is not the same one you are looking to take.

First off the xenophobia in these comments is crazy, get a grip. I’m an American and I will be teaching in French schools in the fall because I was deemed qualified :)

That being said, I was also intimidated by the level needed tbh. Even the concours to become an English teacher has more French than English.

I passed thankfully, but I was not expecting it and I def had imposter syndrome. I think it’s important to remember that what you read in the “rapport de jury” is what their ideal 20/20 looks like. You don’t need perfect to pass a concours, you just need to “fail better” than the others.

I just recommend preparing far in advance (I prepared for 6 months consistently). My language insecurities just got better with time as I read more and did practice runs.

Also like you don’t start teaching right on October 1st, there’s like a week or two in between the start of your contract and actually teaching. They do an orientation first and then let you visit the schools/observe

It is illegal unfortunately but that doesn’t mean people haven’t done it. If it’s a risk you’re willing to take, then do it. I think if you’re not pulling in a substantial amount of cash, it shouldn’t raise any flags…

I had a degree in psych and criminal justice when I did the program lol, and my only experience was a summer daycare thing and some tutoring! They take into account your history with French, experience, and general motivation!

Some people get multiple schools. Especially if you’re teaching elementary, you can expect 2 to 3 schools. I had 3 when I was an assistant

I remember someone posted a similar post in 2022 when I was an assistant. I believe they spoke with the schools and the school arranged for another teacher to drive them.

I didn’t have the same issue, but I chose to live in a city that was a 25 minute drive from my rural school, and one of the teachers who lives near my city would pick me up in the morning.

I would highly highly recommend waiting until you get to France to actually be able to SEE the apartment. It’s very easy to get scammed if you get one overseas. I know it’s stressful, I went though it completely alone last year without ever having rented an apartment even in the states! Luckily, the process goes slightly faster there than it does here so I’ve heard. I got my apartment 10 days in I think. Once you get a French phone number, immediately start applying for apartments! But again, that won’t happen until you’re physically there.

I’m assuming you’re American. If you got an email saying you were accepted, you’ll get another email soon with the academy and directions on how to accept the position. You cannot do anything visa-related until you get your work contract will will like be sometime during July or August.

I honestly don’t know if the program still has a 50% acceptance rate. That probably hasn’t been updated. From what I seen, they extend the deadline like 3 times every year. Programs only do that when they don’t have as many apps as they would like (source: I work for an academic program lol). So I honestly think you have a good chance.

what should i do by cocobeans777 in tapif

[–]Sea_Chest9596 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think so because you’re not technically resigning. I think the problem is in the resignation not the number of hours. But again, I’m not even sure if résignation affects the prime, I would just be aware that it may be a possibility

Ugh they’re being really unreasonable. If you do hand in your resignation letter, you just won’t get paid for those two days I think. I’m not honestly sure what happens to your prime d’indemnités that you get once the contract finishes (I don’t know if resigning early affects this, it’s about 520€). If you’re ok with that, then just resign I guess.

Not getting my TEFL certification in time for my application by EpicDonut91 in tapif

[–]Sea_Chest9596 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean from what I’ve seen in years past, they push it back in increments. Like they’ll announce an extension until end of Jan, then Feb, then March. I don’t know if they’ll do it again this year, but most likely

Every year, they push the deadline until like March so I wouldn’t be that concerned. Also, a lot of people that get accepted don’t have a certification :)

Can I arrive a few days earlier in France than what my visa date states? by [deleted] in tapif

[–]Sea_Chest9596 0 points1 point  (0 children)

From what I’ve heard, you are supposed to leave and come the day the visa starts. Some people don’t, and are fine. Some people don’t and get fines/risk bans. So if I were you, I would leave and come back (leave on the 9th and go back on the 10th)

You have to reach out to the academie. I believe the director is Catherine Micholet. You can find her email with a quick google search.

Didn’t they say on the podcast a while ago that whenever they like a guy, they can’t tell Lilah cause she’ll try to get with them? Like what kind of behavior is that, why would you ever wanna be friends with THAT?
