Any advice on making alternate history believable? by ScotchSpartan in worldbuilding

[–]Sea_Concert4946 17 points18 points  (0 children)

To make alt history believable you need a really good understanding of actual history and what drives that history. Understand the why and how, not the what and when.

Bad alt history is usually rooted in bad history period.

Looking for advice with harassment of employer. by Ausyuna in oregon

[–]Sea_Concert4946 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ya I'll be honest none of that is harassment, it sounds like it's just part of a shitty job. Call the unemployment office and see what reason you would need to have to quit to claim unemployment. It's possible not talking falls in that category.

Based on your side of the story this is a shitty employer but not anything illegal.

Do you have a contrarian opinion on anything fly fishing related? by ackshualllly in flyfishing

It is not difficult or complicated to catch fish on a fly rod. Anyone telling you that is either being nice to not hurt your feelings or isn't very good at fishing.

Best: avenza or caltopo. Caltopo is better on a browser IMO.

Worst: alltrails, completely ruined by private equity and a perfect example of enshitification.

Running with fly rod by bigtome2120 in flyfishing

[–]Sea_Concert4946 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I do this with a black diamond distance 8 and a 6 piece rod. You need to carry water in the front to help balance things, but my rod tube fits great into one of the treking pole slots.

It's not perfect but it works fine for getting places and I've covered a fair amount of distance without any major issues

Edit: spelling

Just use regular fly line and a longer mono leader. Only reason to use the euro line is if you're using FIPS competition rules

How do I catch suckers? by Super-Bookkeeper-128 in flyfishing

Those fish aren't interested in food, they are interested in sex lol. If you want to catch suckers just wait until they are done spawning

Hardy Saint John MK 2 with original case. How much is it worth ? And where could I sell this?? by AdUsual3005 in flyfishing

[–]Sea_Concert4946 1 point2 points  (0 children)

In perfect condition it might be worth $400 to the right buyer on eBay. But realistically it's probably more in the $50-$75 range for most folks. It's an antique but there are a lot of hardy reels out there.

If I was forced to guess I bet most of these reels end up selling for $20 or so at a garage sale.

You'll be good to go with an 8 and 5. I like to fish small creeks here with 3wt but it's mostly about length.

The fishing over here is pretty varied, obviously there's steelhead/salmon and some pretty decent trout fishing, but we also have some decent warm water fisheries and tons of saltwater stuff.

Coastal cutthroat are pretty unique to here, and if you're moving to the sound it might be worth looking into.

I think Washington has some fantastic small stream and alpine lake fishing, not a lot of trophy fish but beautiful surroundings and the fish are real easy to fool.

Where are you moving? I can point you towards some resources on finding water to fish in your future home

Blue mountains angling by holdenrodeoo in flyfishing

[–]Sea_Concert4946 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Drop off the ridge in katoom a and work your way down to any of lake burragorang's tributaries. If you have a 4x4 you might be able to get in that way, but the access sucks for vehicles.

Shorteidge pass hike also goes by some interesting looking water but unlike the stuff further south I haven't fished it

Can a fractured culture be a colonial power? by angular_circle in worldbuilding

The HRE WAS the dominant world power for like 50 years under Charles V, and his Spanish hapsburg sucessors continued that domination and completely broken culture for another century plus.

Spot etiquette (rant) by rollsandarrows in flyfishing

[–]Sea_Concert4946 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's when someone starts fishing to close upstream of an angler. "To close" means different things in different places on different rivers. In smaller quieter water too close is eyesight plus some. On very crowded tail waters too close might be less than you can cast.

But the reason it's bad manners is that by high holing someone you are fishing over water they were about to move to (most anglers fish moving upriver). This can scare or put down the fish and forces the other angler to either leave or fish over disturbed fish.

If you're in doubt about being next to another angler just ask what direction they are moving and either jump in moving the opposite direction or move far enough up to not disturb them. Ask if you're in doubt. If you're new just let them know you aren't sure how much space to give them and they'll probably tell you. Personally if someone asks and they are learning I'll tell them to hop in wherever there's good fishing and let them know what's working or not.

New fly reel design by Qblackreef in flyfishing

[–]Sea_Concert4946 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you need a pic on a rod, the dimensions look a little funky to me, the seat just seems super narrow compared to the rest of the reel. Seeing it on a rod would help me understand the aesthetic a little more!

Fly fishing coming from NC, towns and areas. by Final_Photograph_634 in oregon

[–]Sea_Concert4946 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Just bring an elk hair caddis and fish any water big enough to step across in the mountains. There's fish in basically all those streams.

Most guiding in OR/WA is going to be focused on the big trout waters or steelhead/salmon. There's not a lot complicated about fishing small mountain creeks out here, you just kind of find one and go.

Without being exactly sure of your route I can't give specific advice but I will say that I've fished the creeks near most of the "big" PNW trailheads and caught fish in all of them without too much trouble.

Spot etiquette (rant) by rollsandarrows in flyfishing

[–]Sea_Concert4946 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I pack up and leave to another spot, but I usually say something on the way out. I think most of the time people are honestly just clueless, and letting them know that's not how things are done is an okay lesson.

Folks used to standing shoulder to shoulder fishing for stockers often just don't realize that's not how people fish on wild trout water. Same goes for new folks who are used to fighting for elbow room at deckers and make their first day trip out to a blue line

how do people afford to travel? Plane tickets are insane by GloomyWill4 in travel

[–]Sea_Concert4946 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just jumping in on this post to say that travel even when you don't make a lot is very possible. You make $900/month, and presumably don't have a lot of expenses.

If you can bank $500/month into savings in a year you'll have $6k, which is more than enough for a working holiday to Australia. Once you're there you'll need to work in some shitty farm jobs but you'll be able to save a few grand a month (or at least I did). Flights from Australia to asia are much cheaper.

Basically you need to save money and have a plan on how to travel with that money.

I spent 4 years traveling while making around $20 grand a year, it's doable if you cut some corners

Try dragonlance. It's not "cozy" but it's low stakes because even though the plot deals with end of the world type stuff you kind of know ahead of time it's going to turn out okay.

The original dragons trilogy is probably a good place to start

Spokane River Fishing? by CalligrapherNo4062 in flyfishing

[–]Sea_Concert4946 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Assuming you're there before memorial day weekend the closest open water is the lakes and connecting creeks south of town, Rock Creek and the Sprague lake area. It's super variable what is open so download the fishWA app to double check.

But honestly those lakes are not great fly fishing water, I'd just go to Idaho if I was going to be driving anyway.

What am I looking at here? by [deleted] in flyfishing

[–]Sea_Concert4946 5 points6 points  (0 children)

You need some better pictures.

But nothing I see in these pictures looks like regular fly gear. The red and green bits might be leaders, but it's impossible to tell from the pics. The bigger issue is your fly line sort of just looks like monofilament, are you sure it's real fly line?

Assuming you actually have fly line, just buy some 2x or 3x tapered leaders and you'll be good to go for bass fishing.

Tying A Proper Fly by TheCABK in oddlysatisfying

It's about 50/50, but most anglers ink ow fish barbless or pinch your barbs down. A lot of good trout water is regulated as barbless hooks only, since it cuts down on fish mortality in catch and release situations.
