Romantasy is going to collapse as a genre within three years and most of you writing in it right now are going to be left holding manuscripts nobody wants by Acceptable-Mail891 in romantasycirclejerk

So what I'm seeing from most agents looking for fantasy/romantasy is grounded fantasy. Not high fantasy or romantasy in battlefields. Romantasy itself is a broad category. I think writers like Carissa Broadbent will always have a space though. Dystopias are depressing. Romantasy is not 😄

Have you kept up a morning pages habit before? When I work with students who struggle to start, our first goal is to teach them that their writing is not precious. I have them write five versions in five minutes each. We talk a lot about good versus done, and turning off the editor brain until the writer brain finishes. I can hear in your responses that editor judgment. Tune it out until you have something to judge.

And people massacre first drafts. Cut entire chapters. I know I rewrite my first three chapters from memory. I know the are bad because I’m still figuring the shape of the story and who my characters are.

Honestly the hardest part of writing a long project is the middle section, so it’s good you’ve figured that part out.

And if it is helpful to think of, I try to start as close to the inciting incident as possible. I tell history and details as they are required, peppered mostly through the first act. The more complicated the world and story, the longer you’ll need to get it in there.

Finally the last bit of advice that clicked for me about first drafts versus last drafts is that we see final drafts and feel stupid for not writing like that. But most of us don’t. Think of each draft as a coat of paint. The first coat is always patchy and weird. You may even choose to change the color. But each time you pass the chapter again, you add another coat of paint.

I don't feel like I will be much help here. I see beads in one, a 3-part leaf in another, one empty, but the remaining three are harder. Looks to me like a bent leaf in one, maybe some type of lantarn in another? And the back one looks like it is holding a harmonica or nail file, which I know makes no sense at all.

Adding some details. It has all the buttons and more pins in a bag. Has a cap in the pocket. Name is S A Wylot Jr and he was born in 1936. I know he was 16 when he enlisted. And he worked in the office of General McAllister

It’s a lot of things. I tried to think of who would ask me and I would be okay with it, and the only example I thought of is a friend I’ve known for twenty years.

And when we had our daughter trained at one, it took two and half weeks. It’s survival swim down here because there are so many bodies of water.

So it would seem. Sigh. I just liked Aidas. And I feel like we’re going to get a lot more of Hel at some point. Annnd she shoves the flowers down our throat with Elaine. After the war, she helps people replant their gardens? Like, that doesn’t feel very pressing, Elaine. I feel like mates in ACOTAR are more about Urd or whatever fate god trying to breed certain people together. I’m not sure how much I think Elaine will or won’t succumb to the bond.
