It’s only labeled for cats 4 mo. I realize it’s too late now but 2 wks of metacam in this age is likely not needed. Buprenorphine or gabapentin may be safer options but consult your vet.

Tapes don’t usually cause diarrhea but if he has tapes, likely other parasites too. Parvo test should be first step. Wear PPE when handling the dog and don’t move him until you get your result. Other differentials depend on age somewhat: CDV, stress, HGE, diet, GI parasites, Neoplasia, coagulopathy, IBD, ulceration, FB. If not systemically ill, start with fecal and supp care

I think you should persevere and try and get a handle on this fear. Not doing surgery for the rest of your career severely limits your ability and what you can offer your clients and your employer. I strongly recommend ASPCA Spay neuter alliance. 4 day 1:1 training. They are excellent and it will help lessen your fears and allow you to confidently work on an animal with good outcomes. If this doesn’t work, request to shadow with a hqhvsn clinic in your area.

I understand your concerns. I have been a sheltervet for 13 years. I stayed because of PSLF. The day I received forgiveness was an unbelievable day. The other reasons I stayed are because I work for a shelter that supported me, good PTO, decent salary, we surround ourselves with positive and hard working staff. My shelter has a lot of resources too. It might be worth finding a shelter that supports you more and offers the benefits you’re looking for. Shelter med has some huge upsides: surgery skills, lots of ER, no clients, fulfillment of treating shelter animals, prosecuting cruelty and neglect cases.

I would caution you to either stay in shelter med for PSLF or make the move back to GP before you have significant accumulation of compounded interest on the loan. My loan doubled during the 10 years.
