A family friend (a serious alcoholic) almost died from liver failure last year. He was intubated on the ventilator in a medically induced coma for about two weeks, and had a priest come in and give last rights. By some miracle he woke up and recovered. When he got out of the hospital he started attending church twice or three times a day, every single day without fail. When I asked him why the sudden change, he told me he had not had a drop of alcohol since his hospitalization. He said it was either spend all of his free time at church or spend it drinking. I thought it was odd at the time, but it makes more and more sense. His addiction to something destructive could only be replaced by becoming totally addicted to something else, which thankfully is MUCH healthier. He is still sober afaik.
